Pallante pitched equal to or better than Fitts. Fitts had to pitch better than Leahy or Pallante to supplant them for opening day. But it could easily change as the season gets underway. I’m ok with this decision. I rather like Pallante. I’m less sure about Leahy but I’m ok with them trying this experiment in a season of trials.

If Andre can get vs MIA non-stop, as he was scheduled this ST, he could have an innings eater value this season.

Do we have worst luck as far as injuries are concerned? What I thought we had in depth will be tested. Someone better put bubble wrap around Dobbins and Mathews.

I guess you haven’t been following the Cubs.

Its unfortunate for sure. Someone here must have picked up the Fitts voodoo doll rather than Pallante or Leahy.

Maybe the Cubs have had lost MLB arms, but I would like to have seen where we would be if we had the services of Roby, Henderson, and Fitts of course. Hjerpe might not be a big leaguer, but he’d be a bullpen option. Lastly, Hence was once a top prospect, but may not be a top 30 pick now.

I am seeing speculation that Dobbins will come up during this 17 game stretch that begins Friday. Some versions have him a temporary(?) 6th starter rather than replacing anyone now in the rotation. Presumably a decision would be made after the 17 game stretch. I have not seen anything attributed to anyone who might know.

Do we move Liberatore to the bullpen? He hasn’t been very good this year. Maybe skip him for a start or 2?

I don’t think they are ready to do that. Until last night I figured Leahy was closer to the bullpen than Libby but then Leahy gives us 6 decent innings. They would have to think someone at Memphis is ready to step into the rotation. Mathews is getting better but I feel like they will give him more starts in Memphis. The trade deadline or an injury may force their hand.

I think our playoff chances hinge on our rotation other than May and McGreevy and the offense continuing their success. The middle relief has to be better too. I would add Gastelum. Not sure what roster spot he’d get, but he was unescorted upon in June. I like Graceffo, but he is not a swing and miss guy. Not saying he should be cut, but we need bullpen guys who get Ks when needed.

Does Liberatore get demoted or move to the bullpen?

Not sure how bad Dobbins injury is, which makes me wonder if Hjerpe could be an option. At least he might be able to give multiple innings. Stop gap options could be Thompson from Memphis, a return of Roby. Now I understand that Roby needs to get some live action in. If he can get some effective outings in maybe he can help within a month. I’m just trying to figure out options if Pallante and Dobbins are out for a bit.

I will keep repeating how wrong I was about Kyle Leahy as a starter.

Hey – I was equally skeptical. Kyle Reis seemed to be too. And Bob Reed went on several rants about it. We were all wrong. Leahy has been outstanding. And it doesn’t appear to be just a lucky stretch. I sincerely doubt he’s the best pitcher in all of baseball (as his numbers since the All-Star Break may suggest), but he’s been darn good for awhile now and may deserve to be our first starting pitcher extension. Not bad for a guy drafted in the 17th round.

Leahy has been great. The only down side is that he is 29. Also, I was wondering why he came out of the game yesterday with only 63 pitches. Given how much our bullpen had been used, I would have thought he would have near 100 pitches.

The Cardinals will be limiting his innings the rest of the way as a precaution because of his large IP increase already this season.

That seemed ok for the team this year until two other starters were hurt. Now, they have a big innings problem with not a lot of help nearby.

How do people feel about Hjerpe’s chances for the 2026 rotation after today?

I think he starts in Memphis but is the #6 guy who will be called up at some point. I actually prefer that.

Or, what I’d even more love to see, is a piggyback starting system where we have 8 guys who all go 3-5 innings plus Mathews who is a regular starter. In that scenario, Hjerpe fits as one of the piggyback guys.

If Hjerpe stays in STL now and takes a regular turn as a starter or piggy back, then if he looks anything like today, there is no reason he shouldn’t be in the opening day rotation. I was pretty much shocked, to be honest.

They should consider cutting Leahy back further. I think he’s cooked. He’s done enough. Amazing job this year giving the team something it desperately needed.

That was my thought, too. Switch them. Have Hjerpe take the bulk innings and Leahy can throw a few innings afterward if he feels good enough to do so.

It doesn’t really matter as long as they are a piggyback. The only difference is Hjerpe has a better chance to collect the “W” if he comes in 2nd since Leahy is unlikely to go 5. Not that I care as long as the team gets the W.

I’m fine either way as long as Hjerpe is getting innings. I’ll have to watch the recording to see how he looked but it sounds like he looked good in addition to good results. They also have the dead weight rotation spot in Liberatore they can use to get going guys innings if they want to be a little more aggressive.

It would benefit Hjerpe to follow a RHSP so the lineup would likely be lefty heavy, like today. If he is the listed starter, it would be stoked with right handed batters.

Exactly Bling. They can still pinch hit, but sometimes it gets harder to get all the positions to work out so he would certainly face some lefties, which he absolutely owns throughout his Minor League tenure.

Graceffo is another possibility for the rotation this year and next.
