Yes, there would be a ripple affect all the way down, with as many as 10 Double-A players playing a level up to replace the 40-man players locked out, for example. That means more High-A players will be with Springfield, etc. The Cardinals may also be more aggressive signing minor league free agents this fall to help fill the lockout gap.
Of course, this isn’t Cardinals specific. Every organization will have the same issues, but everyone may or may not go about dealing with it the same way. I spoke about this lockout gap a week ago on the podcast.
August 27, 2026 at 10:37 am #317369Since everything under the sun is now measured and analyzed I would like to know what Rainiel’s body fat percentage is. That might be something to monitor going forward.
August 27, 2026 at 10:49 am #317376I haven’t stood next to Rodriguez since spring training, but at that time, I had no trigger to be concerned about his weight. (I get you are saying body fat, but the closest surrogate I have is what I see.)
He could have gained weight during the season, but that would be unusual. Most players lose weight because of the long in-season grind, and if they put on pounds, it would be during the winter months.
It does bear watching, though.

AA pay, meal money, clubhouse buffet, all better than A ball. Living large. Wait till he’s the spread they put out in AAA!!

He looks like he needs to lay off of the jelly donuts.

I respectfully disagree. Especially because of the lockout threat, the Cards would not want to put RR on the 40-man yet and it would be very odd for them to leapfrog Bernal, who is already on the roster, is a top prospect in his own right and is having a good year at Triple-A.

Bernal who? R-Rod is sucking up all the oxygen.
August 28, 2026 at 8:10 am #317412The Cards said they aren’t rushing anyone, and so far, they’ve stuck to it.
August 28, 2026 at 8:39 am #317417So far all their promotions have been justified and the prospects have eventually done well or flourished. Many questioned the Rodriguez promotion to AA, but he has proven worthy.
