I don’t understand him. He has some good starts at AAA and finally gets promoted to the Cardinals. He has a fairly good start at the major league level and tonight he gives up 4 hits and walks SIX in three innings for Memphis.

Mathews looked amazing for his first 1+ year in the minors but hurt himself in the process. He has had good games and bad games ever since. That is just how it goes. If he has a few good ones in a row people get all lathered up. That is also just how it goes.

I didn’t watch this one so I don’t have a take on it. Maybe just some frustration playing out. I did see there was a costly error behind him before he gave up a grand slam early that may have amped that frustration. Either way, he has to be much better than he was this last game. Before that though, he had 10 really good starts in a row at Memphis.

I think the org badly wants to get some of the higher ceiling starters into the rotation next year. The lockout complicates it, but that aside, Mathews seems most likely to get a slot right out of camp. Other guys have just returned to the mound and others are yet too. If they stay healthy there will some exciting contestants later in the 27 season. Then there are a few interesting guys coming up who have not had health issues. Franklin and the new AA guy, Eagan? or something like that. It seems like the pen will benefit from all that as the 27 season goes along, there being only so many rotation and depth slots. If they hire a new May, it will clog it up some.

An explanation by Bloom about getting Mathews ready for St. Louis.
