“Somebody from Memphis” is now starting at SS?

OK jj, carry Firmin on the STL roster all year, instead of calling him up from Memphis if necessary. That is better, I assume?

Herrera (bench 1) is a necessity. Catcher is covered.

The corners are set; 1B, 3B, LF and RF. Donovan at DH can backup or rest those starters while they stay in the lineup.

Edman in CF and Carlson (bench 2) as the 4th OF, is adequate depth.

SS is unproven, with more unproven behind him on the depth charts.
    —–
There are two bench roles available for me, and I don’t see more than a PH role for either of Baker or Burly unless an injury occurs. Either could be another “somebody” from Memphis.

They are not D first players, or pinch run candidates. So their only value is their unproven bats.

And that’s my problem with carrying Fermin. There is never ever a time when playing Fermin is better than playing someone else. He would just sit on the bench for an emergency backup or play garbage innings. Siani could actually help win games. If Contreras or Burleson or maybe Gorman hits a late single or double and we’re 1 run down or tied, Siani’s speed makes him a great pinch runner option. It’s different than Mercado last season. Mercado was not a difference maker on the basepaths. Plus, Siani is a useful late game defensive replacement for either Walker in right or Edman in CF so Edman can replace Gorman at 2B.

Donovan can serve as the emergency SS for one game. Yes, there could be a situation 1 time in 162 games where we need a 4th option at SS. But carrying Fermin for that 1 time in 162 games just feels both like a conventional thing to do and also probably a foolish thing to do.

This feels like a very Cardinal move. I’d have rather hung on to Palacios and traded Carlson for a better than a ‘coin flip he’ll turn out good pitcher’.

I’ve always thought that if you get to more than three – ‘if this guy turns out ok’ – on your team that things tend to fall apart more often than not.

You said Donny or Edman covers SS for a day.

So Fermin is your everyday depth plan at SS if Winn needs demoted? Prieto? The next “somebody at Memphis”?

I’m not a prospect hugger Bling. Burly and Baker are familiar, but they don’t fill a roster need without a significant injury.

I really liked Palacios but I don’t mind the trade. Knowing the Rays Palacios will probably become a World Series MVP but we can’t worry about that. As jnevel mentioned the question is whether Kittredge is an upgrade over VerHagen? I would say he probably is.

To be honest, I would have rather kept Palacios and traded Carlson for an even better pen guy. The reason is that I do not see Carlson reverting to 2021 Carlson, so him covering CF everday for any stretch is just not viable. You can’t have an outfielder hitting .220 day in, day out. Besides, Carlson has little shelf life as Mo is not going to pay him big to sit on the bench.

That may be bling but Carlson’s value is the ability to play CF. I am still not sold on Edman as an everyday CF, especially if he could be moved to SS after the first Winn slump.

I agree with blingboy about keeping Palacious. However, I would have kept Carlson and traded Burleson. I realize the Rays are needing to replace Wander Franco (who’s MLB career is over), but I found it surprising they wanted Palacious. Considering how they’ve swindled the Cards in the past, this would have made me have second thoughts on the trade.

Also, why Kittredge? The Korean reliever the Padres signed seemed like a better option and he’s not coming off TJS. We’ll see in a year or so but at the moment I don’t like the trade. Feels like Dollar Bill Dewitt is turning the Cardinals into a poverty franchise.

Sounds like we should add a backup vet SS, and a CF friendly OF’r to the bench for depth Bling.

Burly and Baker are not candidates for those roles.

My thinking is a lot like that, jj. Last season we saw those guys hardly ever get in games, and not when it mattered. ie, they got in games to give them playing time, not because their skill set was just the thing in a situation to help win a game. I wish we had a more dynamic bench this year, with guys who could be deployed to give us an advantage is leverage situations.

A speed guy. A defensive replacement guy. An experienced professional situational hitter. Something useful. We certainly don’t need two guys whose sole attribute is hitting minor league fastballs over the wall.

A Caesar Izturis type acquisition would provide enough safety net for Winn.

Jankowski is a FA. He has signed for 1.25mil the last two offseasons.

Burly and Baker logged 446 PA’s last season, combined. Gorman and Walker were each in the 460’s.

    1) Who would you rather see get the 446 PA’s next season with us, if one of Burly and Baker were traded away?

    2) Does your answer change if Goldy were already extended for two more seasons (thru 2026)?

Another 30-something pitcher, with recent injury woes no less, for one of the few guys who was a bright spot last year.

I don’t like the deal, although the Cardinals had no intention of giving Palacios much of a chance. Given the Rays history of seeing untapped talent and giving them a shot at every day play, this deal could be yet another clunker in what has become a pattern of miscues by management.

Well another low hanging fruit deal. It’s rather cheap so I can’t argue with it. If it turns out bad, we don’t lose much, if he stays healthy, then maybe some good cones out of it. Only thing I’ll say is it’s just one more thing that may keep them from getting a better reliever that more likely could help.

We don’t have anybody for the bench roles. There is nothing behind the group of starting players. Just 4A guys Mo scraped up.

Mo said Palacios was likely headed for AAA. Really?
I guess Baker and Burly need more audition time.
    You saw who TB wanted.

Palacios was the sixth outfielder. Without spring injuries to others, I don’t see how he would have made the Opening Day roster. He would have been nice depth, though.

Still, they bought low and sold high on Palacios. If Kittredge can do what he did before, it will be a good trade.

I’m 100% behind the trade. That’s as good of flier as can be had.

Carlson as the 4th OF and Palacios as the 5th for me. Who is your 5th OF ahead of Palacios?

Exactly. You know they were gonna give Burleson a shot over him, which made him expendable. Siani gives you the short term coverage if they want or need to move Edman to SS too.

    Pads,
TB traded for an outfielder, not a weak hitting 1B/DH in Burly. We will put anyone in the outfield.

It’s quite a glaring difference in roster construction, by two different orgs.

OF is set with Carlson and Burly #4 and #5.

    Catching is set.

The only competition right now is for infielder #6. And Fermin isn’t the answer.

Heck lets give Baker a try! You’re the backup SS, somebody get him a glove!
