Opening Night Minor league thread – Thu 4/4/19

Break up the Chiefs! And I’m not referring to the ones who ply their trade in Kansas City. The Peoria Chiefs opened up their 2019 campaign with a resounding 10-2 thrashing of Cedar Rapids’ always competitive Kernels squad. The Chiefs shucked Kernels pitching for 17 hits, with every starting player getting in on the action with at least one hit. Three Chiefs contributed 3 hits…..Brendan Donovan, Leandro Cedeno and Ivan Herrera, with the Chiefs catcher being the only player in this game to find the Perfect Game Field cheap seats with bat in hand. Tommy Parsons was simply marvelous in his 5 innings of labor, allowing no runs and just one hit, while whiffing 5 and issuing 2 free passes. Freddie Pacheco, Chris Hunt and Noel Dr Jesus mopped things up, with Pacheco being the only Chief reliever to experience difficulties. Home plate ump, A. J. Choc called one whale of a game and will be one to keep an eye on here in 2019. 1,159 disgruntled Kernel fans witnessed this drubbing and it was completed in a rather pedestrian time of 3 hours and 24 minutes.

I mentioned several weeks ago that I thought Peoria would be the best minor league team in the organization this year and I still think that. There could be even more talent on the way. If Gorman gets bumped up later in the year I would like the organization to get aggressive and let Nunez, Torres, and Soler finish out the season in Peoria.

It’s certainly a possibility, gscottar. Although Memphis probably will have something to say about it…they may not be as good as last year or 2017, but those were such brilliant teams that they could easily win the PCL again on the strength of a very good rotation.

Justin Toener had himself a night. (2-2) 2 walks, a double and 2 stolen bases, two runs and RBI and an outfield assist at second. Palm Beach beat Jupiter 5-1. JrFernandez, RWilliams and Gregerson all pitched in relief. Only Gregerson got roughed up a bit.
