Debating on when/if to do a 2nd Tommy John surgery on him. Apparently the 2nd one takes a little longer to recover from. In the meantime I guess he will continue to hit until a decision is made.

    As a result, I don’t see a 10 year/$500,000,000 contract coming for him this off-season.

What a shame. He was Babe Ruth.

I guess he’ll have to settle for being a HoF outfielder.

I wonder how much of any playing the outfield and those throws contributed to this?

Pitchers do usually throw some between starts but the motion for an outfielder is different.

Didn’t seem to bother Ruth, or did he end up having issues?

    Anybody know for sure?

Why are some acting as if a second TJS (if needed) would end his pitching career?

Here is the story direct from LA.

This was tragic, but predictable. I’m no expert on muscle regeneration, but it seems a starting pitcher would need recovery time after a start. Maybe a day or 2 out of the lineup?

This man is such a joy for baseball. I wish him all the best for a perfect medical re-establishment whatever that turns out to be. We need him in the game, but I hope they don’t keep sending him out there to play meaningless games for a hopeless bottom-dweller like us.

Man, that is a real bummer! These days with pitchers throwing hard so often, it really stresses the elbow and shoulder.

Ruth stopped pitching for the most part when he was 25. His career was primarily as a pitcher-only in the early years, and an outfielder only in the remaining years. He did do a little crossover of both in his last couple of Red Sox seasons, but not to the extent that the Angels have done with Ohtani.

Well he is still the best hitter on the planet and the torn UCL won’t stop him from DHing. Maybe instead of $500M he will only get $400M.

From the article posted above, this morning.

“With his future as a pitcher in doubt, it is unlikely that he would be able to reach that level.”

That was in the context of the scale of his upcoming FA contract.

My thinking is he will try pitching again if he is able to. Obvously, he’s blown out his elbow before, so he is doing something to it which it cannot tolerate indefinitely. I think he is smart enough to understand that, so I do not expect to see him try to pitch the same as he was. He may end up deciding to give it up. Anyone who signs him will have to factor that in.

The reason pitching and hitting is not done at the elite level – highly risky. He did give the Angels 86 starts with a terrific 38-19 record and 3.01 ERA. But it is hard to do that and play every day in the field for an extended period of time.

But as you get higher up the ladder in athletic competition, you usually have to specialize in one main phase of the sport. Same way in other endeavors – usually you major in one specific skill.

Unless hitting adds stress to his elbow, which I highly doubt since he is continuing to hit pre-surgery, then the fact he hits and pitches both should not increase the risk of needing TJS.

I’m sure all that DH play contributed to his arm injury. Lol

I’d say it’s difficult to decide whether you want a guy like him to pitch every 5th day or to step into the box 4 or 5 times every game. The old school of thought held that a talented everyday player was worth more than the top tier SP’er who only worked once every 4th or 5th day, but that may have changed.

With “a guy like him”, its every 5th day in between TJ rehab years.

Yeah, it looks like that’s the case. I just recall years ago when the prospect of a trade involving a first rate position player for a talented SP’er, the prevailing mindset seemed to be that it wasn’t a good idea to give up an everyday player for a pitcher. At any rate, countless things have changed and that mindset may no longer exist. Heck, we don’t even have genuine extra innings anymore…Haha!

Good point on the DH aspect. If a guy is only DHing between pitching appearances, that certainly reduces the injury risk. In the Babe’s day you had to be on the field every day. Much tougher to do that and maintain a regular pitching routine than being a DH.
