If Ohtani is innocent he will sue the Angels. The interpreter was employed by them.
The interpreter worked with Ohtani’s team in Japan. It seems like Ohtani was responsible for him getting the job with the Angels and Dodgers.
Gambling has become normal in society. Everyone you turn around there is a betting site as on television. ESPN now has a gambling app.
And once the genie is out of the bottle, you can’t put it back.
My guess is that Ohtani, his agent, the Dodgers, and MLB just want this all to go away and will be quiet. Their hope is that the interpeter takes the fall and that is the end of it.
It will be interesting to see if Ohtani shows mercy towards this shady interpretor come sentencing time. If he does, it wouldn’t be because of the goodness of his heart, but rather the gratitude. It wouldn’t shock me to see the 16 million dollar man freed from jail after only a couple year stretch and then living in the lap of luxury……but that information would most likely never be revealed. It’s probably not cool to convict Ohtani at this point, but it’s really difficult to imagine a seemingly normal human being, being so unattached and ignorant of his finances.
The secrecy and brush off has the feel of a cover up.
Speaking of secrecy – I hope to live long enough to see the JFK assassination file opened to the public. I have no idea what is in that file one way or the other – I just want to know, lol.

MLB and other leagues got into bed with legalized sports betting and everyone with a brain should have seen something like this coming

It wasn’t very long ago at all that I watched an interview in which Willie Jr’s adorable offspring known as Little Willie lll, was strongly promoting and advocating legalized sports wagering in the state of Missouri. Would it be at all possible to have him permanently banished from the game of baseball…Please?
CBS Sports had an article about how much these guys wagered and won/lost.
Truly astonishing they would throw their careers away over this.
All of these guys need to appeal and go with the “a friend placed these bets using my money and I didn’t know about it” defense. Worked for another guy.

This is nothing at all new and should have been fully expected. Intimidation and the genuine threat of violence have always been a primary and integral component of organized gambling.
The revenue stream of MLB’s cut is part of making the pie bigger, which allows players’ slice to be bigger. It’s not like they are the innocent victims. The money doesn’t just fall out of the sky.
Sometimes people have to learn the hard way that an all out damn the torpedoes pursuit of the greenbacks has consequences.
That is awful to hear about the players, but it isn’t unexpected given what gambling does to people. I hate seeing it advertised the time. I can imagine that for people struggle with addiction and specifically gambling have a hard time resisting the urge to relapse when being bombarded by ads and “free” offers.

You seem to be suggesting there is a direct tie between MLB revenue (growth or decline) and player salaries.
My understanding is that a percentage of local team revenues are pooled, but if that is correct, I believe it would exclude national contracts such as FanDuel and the like. And with revenue sharing, teams are not required to spend on player salaries at a minimum level (beyond 26 players x MLB minimum salary).
P.S. I don’t believe the Players Union has any say in how MLB supports gambling, though in the current CBA, players are allowed under certain circumstances to have sponsorship agreements with betting companies.
Bottom line, I believe that many (maybe most) of the players ARE in fact innocent victims.
The more owners take in, the more they are going to spend. I am sure MLBPA knows that and so do the players.
