OBP = Others Better Plate (me).
I’m not sure you understand…a team only has 27 outs. If someone reaches base, they are not making one of those 27.
Example: Joe Morgan only had a .271 BA. However, he was so valuable because he didn’t make outs like other players. His .392 OBP led to him scoring 1650 runs despite a relatively low BA for a first ballot HOF player.
HOF’er “Little Joe” Morgan was undoubtedly a great offensive catalyst for several teams during his 22 year career, but I was always surprised to note that he was a player who really struggled during the post-season. In 50 post-season games he went 33 for 181 for a paltry BA of .182 and an OBP of .323. As a lead-off guy in the post-season, he was no Rickey or Lou.

The bottom two paragraphs aren’t mine. Just the first sentence. Someone tagged on me? Reply? Something.Joe Morgan was a great on-base guy, with some pop as well. Sparky never had him lead off though – he usually had Pete Rose lead off with Morgan at 3 I believe.
Before Joe was in Cincy Sparky had Rose and Bobby Tolan at 1 and 2. I always thought back then that he should reverse those two, but hey, Sparky is in the Hall and I am posting on an internet forum. 😀
Thinking of OBP, think I have a new stat that might be one of the best ways to determine a player’s offensive value. Here is the calc:
OBP + (runs scored + RBI – HR)/PA
You are combining getting on base, in other words not making outs, with how many runs you contribute to as a percentage of your plate appearances. After all, runs are the name of the game. If you are not making outs and scoring or driving in runs at a higher relative pace than average, you are doing a lot for your offense.
He needs to stay healthy and make consistent contact, those comps to Ohtani and Soto are just nonsense, but potentially he can be a very productive player. He also is on a cheap deal and only 27. Not someone they should be looking to trade but to keep developing
I’m announcing a buy early alert on Nootbaar stock. We have the comparable IsoD trend that led to Carpenters’ breackout. This selectivity suggests the optimizing of Lars future slg% w/elevated growth potential. Strong Buy.
Nootbaar is very similar to Donovan in PA’s / service time.
Lars is averaging 2.34 PA’s per service day, Donny is averaging 2.54
DL time acquires service days also, so “availability” is baked in above.
Two series in the books and Noot has done an incredible job of setting the table for an improved Cardinal offense.
Fingers crossed he stays healthy.

Let’s hope he can continue to fill that lead-off role and stay healthy enough to appear in enough games to possibly come close to crossing HP 90 to 100 times.

17 RBI 18 Runs ScoredOne could make the case he’s the best leadoff man in baseball to-date this season.
Those 18 runs scored are the outstanding number. I know a lot of emphasis is placed on OBP for a lead-off hitter, but in my view, OBP doesn’t mean a thing if that lead-off guy isn’t crossing HP.
Well one thing is certain…IF the leadoff man doesn’t get on base, he’s definitely not crossing home plate!
And what you say isn’t entirely accurate….as a hitter can get on base, not score, but his getting on base could lead to others scoring.
I love Nootbaar as a player, but I think that guy Ohtani is a better hitter than Nootbaar and he also is a lead off batter. You could argue Ohtani isn’t a typical lead off. Corbin Carroll is a more typical leadoff hitter and I would take him. Those are just off the top of my head as many teams out their best hitter leadoff now to get the most PAs
Rickey, Lou, Pete, Tim and Ichi were my ideas of the prototype lead-off hitter. And I’ll throw in Vince just so’s there’s two Redbirds on my list…When those guys reached 1B, it was already 1-0…
