Which one is not like the others?
Ohtani
Soto
NootbaarLars is a nice player when healthy, but c’mon…
Other opinions out there?
Many MLB metrics put Lars Nootbaar's potential in line with Shohei Ohtani & Juan Soto. The #STLCards OF is now hoping to show what he can do.

stlcard25ParticipantOk then….
I’m on team Trade Noot so if someone thinks there’s a Soto or Ohtani in there, by all means let them think that.
As is, he’s a useful player on a team full of useful players and no stats. Hopefully he does stay healthy and contribute but I’m not sure there’s even All Star potential there, let alone MVP type potential.

jj-cf-stlParticipantCleanup leads off many innings too. Leadoff is not the only way to utilize obp.
March 17, 2025 at 10:58 am #277699Noot needs to stay healthy and play 145-150 games. If he does he will likely be much better than what we have seen – perhaps a 4 to 5 WAR guy. Or in old school numbers, a .290 hitter with mid 20s ding-dongs and possibly 85-90 RBI, plus good defense in left field. Perhaps kind of a “2021 Ty O’Neill”.
March 17, 2025 at 12:32 pm #277702People need to quit being in love with him because of his cool name.
They need to love him because of what he does on the field.
So far in his career he has not done much on the field. I believe he’s about a career .240 hitter.

March 17, 2025 at 4:08 pm #277705O’Neil is a lot better comp than those other guys Bike.
March 17, 2025 at 4:58 pm #277707Yeah I don’t think I would be comparing him to Ohtani and Soto. Good grief.
He is more of a LH version of Ryan Ludwick.
March 17, 2025 at 6:40 pm #277711Noot even said, “…something is missing because I am not those players.” Just throwing out what might be missing, in addition to the injuries. Noot can just about match those guys with velocity-off-the-bat, but maybe he does that twice every three games. Ohtani possibly does it twice a game, and maybe Soto 1.5 times per game (or 3 times every 2 games).
March 17, 2025 at 7:33 pm #277713Noot has been around for a while now to be a guy with potential who still has to prove it. Waiting and hoping while a guy burns through years of control is a losing proposition.
March 17, 2025 at 8:58 pm #277714My estimation is that the Nootz has already realized his full potential which is the sort of player that plays the role of a decent complimentary piece. On a good team with a solid and talented roster he’d play a similar role as a player such as John Mabry. So yeah, you can say Nootbar and Mabry in the same breath as Ohtani and Soto…

If these 3 Cardinal teammates have to prove it, we are completely unproven, top to bottom.March 17, 2025 at 10:23 pm #277716As much as I love Nootbaar, those are some ridiculous comparisons. Nootbaar hits the ball hard, but Ohtani and Soto are still ahead by a few MPH. Ohtani is 100% percentile in many batting areas and Soto 98%. Noot has a good amount of red (good) measures, but not nearly the extremes of Soto and Ohtani.
I think Noot has the potential to be a consistent All Star if he stays healthy, but he needs to start putting the ball in the air more and being aggressive. Noot often takes hittable pitches as he is looking for a walk rather than looking for a good pitch to hit like Ohtani and Soto. I am not a mechanics guy though to know if some slight tweaks can help him hit more like drives and fly balls though. His 2022 launch angle and per rate numbers were actually better and maybe he can get back there.

March 18, 2025 at 11:19 am #277736Noot is probably the guy that can make the biggest jump in production on our club. Herrera might be another guy like that. I see both of those guys as more likely to be real good in the next couple of years than Gorman or Walker.
But who knows. Walker seems like a guy that will struggle for awhile early on, then start to put it together in the second half. Gorman – I don’t know. He looks to be regressing.
March 19, 2025 at 5:55 pm #277772Needs to stay healthy…but…when healthy he gets on base. A lot.
Needs to hit first or second and have hitters who can bring him home.
March 19, 2025 at 5:58 pm #277773But he gets on base. A lot.
He also gets hurt a lot.
If healthy, he’s an incredibly valuable player.

Really?
A career .240 hitter is incredibly valuable???
March 19, 2025 at 7:49 pm #277778Rats, we will have to agree to disagree philosophically if batting average is the sole hitter evaluation criteria.
March 19, 2025 at 10:08 pm #277784I like The Nootz okay, but Lars will never be the household superstar name that Tommy Edman is with the Dodgers…Haha!
March 19, 2025 at 10:10 pm #277785Maybe Trout is a more apt comparison? At least the injury profile might line up better. Yeah, that’s it.

What is this…1962? Yes. He gets on base! Career .348 OBP. That’s typically top 15! His OBP this spring is .480…that’s number 1 in all of baseball.
If healthy he’s extremely valuable because he gets on base.
March 19, 2025 at 10:37 pm #277787I’m all for reaching base, Albert, but unless the baserunner comes around to score, OBP is just another wooden nickel stat.
March 27, 2025 at 5:39 pm #278128
jj-cf-stlParticipantOBP = Others Better Plate (me).
March 27, 2025 at 5:43 pm #278129Good one JJ
March 27, 2025 at 5:49 pm #278130
jj-cf-stlParticipantHR you plate yourself, but overall, it’s a team game that relies on obp rallies.
