February 13, 2023 at 7:00 pm #212528I am so filled with emotion a bit of it is leaking out.
February 13, 2023 at 7:25 pm #212531Johnny barrels up another one and adds to his legendary status…
February 13, 2023 at 7:27 pm #212532Well deserved. He has made the Cardinals consistent winners.
February 13, 2023 at 7:44 pm #212534No, that can’t be argued, GameCard. But it also can’t be argued that he’s made Cardinal managers consistently nervous…Haha!
February 13, 2023 at 7:57 pm #212536Oh well more of the same coming up. Central Champs forever. No more.
February 13, 2023 at 8:03 pm #212537I often poke fun at Johnny only because it’s easy and I find him humorous at times. However, the guy recently landed two of the elite players in the NL in trades that I never would have imagined could be made for what was surrendered. Moreover, he’s had quite a bit of recent success shoring up the roster at midseason. I’ll continue to point out all of his quirky eccentricities and have a bit of fun while he’s around, but the net bottom line is that he’s produced results and that’s the only thing guys like Willie Jr. care about.
February 13, 2023 at 10:15 pm #212545He’s brought on WS win in his tenure. Hardly iconic status. He’s a stooge and a lapdog for junior and nothing more.
February 14, 2023 at 8:02 am #212553Anybody think this is probably his last extension before retiring?
February 14, 2023 at 8:10 am #212555Nobody knows.

ParticipantWith many people craving analytics why doesn’t someone put together a spreadsheet that would give the GMs a seasonal number grade. We could become informed about all the GMs since some go relatively unnoticed….. see how our guy compares with the rest of them. Maybe our guy isn’t doing that bad at all in comparison. Put the number on a new GM baseball card. Boy would this cause a stir.
File this under under NGH…. not gonna happen.

ParticipantHow many losing seasons have we had since he’s been part of the organization? How may playoff appearances? How many WS appearances? How many titles? Compare that to other organizations.
February 14, 2023 at 10:59 am #212566A lot of fans will point to a W/L record of 35-43 in post-season games since Johnny’s been the boss. I’d say that’s a legitimate gripe, but 8 games below sea level isn’t too awfully bad. You can also say that simply being afforded the opportunity to play almost 80 post-season games since Johnny came along in ’07 is pretty good. At any rate, I’m no different than anyone else in the sense that I’m always disappointed unless I’m smiling at the end of the last game of the season.
February 14, 2023 at 11:08 am #212567Anybody think this is probably his last extension before retiring?
He is only 54 so I wouldn’t think he would be retiring in three years but I guess anything is possible.
February 14, 2023 at 11:15 am #212568Johnny won’t retire until they unveil a statue adorned with a bow tie at 8th and Spruce St.
February 14, 2023 at 11:46 am #212571Note the succession comments in this…
February 14, 2023 at 12:40 pm #212574That article claims 79 post-season games during Johnny’s tenure and I only counted 78, so I probably missed one game in my count. It also claims that the number is second only to the Dodgers total of 116 post-season games during that time period. I’m too lazy to look it up, but if that’s accurate, I’d have to guess that the Dodgers must have a horrible W/L pct. in those 116 post-season games. Incidentally, by my count, the Cardinals are sitting precisely at sea level during Johnny’s tenure as Cardinal boss at 9-9 in post-season series. I wish it were better, but dead even ain’t too bad at all. Every out’s a tough one in the post-season.
February 14, 2023 at 1:39 pm #212575No, 9-9 in series wins/losses and below .500 in games won in the playoffs…that is bad. We have a guy who puts together a regular season teams but forgets that there are playoffs and that is only thing that matters. We need new owners and a new POBO…soon.
February 14, 2023 at 1:56 pm #212576Well, think about this for a minute or two…The Dodgers have appeared in 21 WS. They’ve won a total of 7 of them…Ouch!
February 14, 2023 at 2:21 pm #2125771td, your first post about LAD during the “Mo years” had me curious and made me look. They are 61-55 in playoff games during that time and are 14-11 in playoff series.
As you noted, the Cards are 9-9 in playoff series under Mo, but 36-43 in games. The trend is the really bad part though. The Cards have lost 6 of the last 7 series. That ought to raise some flags. Need to do something different? Maybe firing managers is the wrong conclusion.
Or maybe it shouldn’t raise flags. That would be consistent with the ridiculous idea that just getting to the playoffs should be the target and it’s mostly the luck of getting hot thereafter that matters.
February 14, 2023 at 3:29 pm #212581I’ll be darned, Euro. I would have thought the Dodger W/L record since ’07 would have been worse. And yeah, the recent trend is nowhere near nice and last Oct. really put an exclamation point on the state of Cardinal affairs in the post-season. What’s really bad, is that other than a season that I disregard, they haven’t even managed to win a post-season game in what now seems like forever.
February 14, 2023 at 3:41 pm #212582Nobody cares what DeJong did 5 or 6 years ago and we should care what Mo did 10 or 12 years ago even less. In both cases the career results trajectory has been on a downslope long enough that it is unrealistic to expect it to turn around at this point. But miracles can happen, so I’m hoping for one, in both cases.
February 14, 2023 at 4:53 pm #212584The Cardinals last 10 postseason games have produced a record of 1-9.
The Cardinals last postseason series victory occurred in 2019.
So much for the playoff randomness theory. As for the front office succession plans, I would imagine Girsch, Flores, and Rodriguez will be moving up in the organization at some point or moving up with a different organization. Mo might depart the Cardinals in three years but that doesn’t necessarily mean he would be retiring.
February 14, 2023 at 5:32 pm #212585Last season O’Neill had 58 RBIs, which was the most on the team by a Mo era homegrown. That ranks 112th in MLB. A few guys played more than him, but they all had fewer RBIs. As far as wins by a starter goes, Hudson had 8. That’s tied for 71st. Say want you want about the system, but those numbers are the end result.
February 14, 2023 at 6:28 pm #212587Bling boy, obviously it does matter what Dejong did 5 years ago and what Mo did 12 years ago because we keep paying them huge sums of money to NOT hit and lose in the playoffs! Good gravy!
