That must stink for them. I’m lucky that I’m just blacked out for the Redbirds, Cubs and Sox, and my provider carries (at least for now) all of their networks. Though the only reason I check on the Cubbies is to hope they’re getting a beating. 🙂
I could understand blacking out games within a 2 hour drive of the team’s stadium back in the day but I do not understand it today.
The idea was to entice proximate fans to buy tickets and attend games but it appears that every square inch of the US is included in at least 1 blackout zone even if you live 4-5+ hours from the stadium.
I just read that Guam is in the LA Dodgers and Oakland A’s blackout zone. That is the singular dumbest thing I have read in a very long time.

I’ve never subscribed to MLBTV and have a few questions that hopefully someone can answer. I live in Oklahoma so Cardinal games are blacked out. I am thinking about subscribing to a VPN and putting the app on my Firestick. If I use the MLB app on the Firestick should I be able to see Cardinal games if I use a server in say Texas? Also, to get the Cardinal minor league games I will need to select St. Louis as my favorite team when I sign up. Will this create issues? Any help or suggestions is appreciated.
I have not run into any problems with the MLB.TV or MILB.TV. I have had both for about 3 years now. I live in Michigan, so any Detroit game that is televised is blacked out on MLB.TV. As far as MILB.TV, St Louis is listed as my favorite team, but I do not have any problems with any minor league teams be it St Louis affiliates or any other MLB Team affiliates. Hope this helps answer some of your questions.
I don’t have any experience with VPN’s. But according to what I’ve read, you can see the Cardinals affiliates when you select St. Louis as your favorite team. There should be no issue with you picking St. Louis as your favorite as there are Cardinals fans across the entire country. You can also switch back and forth with other favorite teams as needed to see other minor league games.
Brian, I can testify to using a VPN to watch Cardinal games in a blacked out area on MLB.TV. I have the Cardinals selected as my favorite team and have no issues with the service. I do, however have to turn off my VPN when accessing my YouTube.TV account. A bit of a hassle, but worth it to be able to watch all the Cardinal games I want to. I can’t speak to the MiLB games since this is the first year that they are included with MLB.TV.
I am thinking about subscribing to a VPN
A couple of points:
1. MLB actively tries to thwart VPN viewers. Not all VPNs are the same in price or effectiveness. Do your research first. Google “best VPN MLB.tv” for starters, lol. The worst VPNs might have bottlenecks that make streaming slow, choppy, and unacceptable. They might also lack a robust enough network with enough tunnels/paths to keep MLB at bay. It’s a fluid environment from year to year and VPNs are far from perfect.
2. Just be aware that somewhere in the MLB.tv agreement you will consent to, I am almost certain there is wording to the effect that bypassing geo-restrictions is not allowed and they can revoke your account if necessary to prevent it. People do it all the time though and don’t get caught. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to use a VPN, especially when you value security and privacy. Big corps/big Tech run fast and loose in these areas with your activities on the internet and resulting personal data. It’s only going to get worse as AI evolves. They’re also careless and sloppy after they database it all. Look at all the high profile security breaches over the years. I think that’s why so many don’t think twice about using their own accessible tech (i.e., VPNs) to give big Corps (MLB in this case) the middle finger. I make no judgements, LOL.
