Due to Shew and Gomber being ILed recently, Memphis is forced to have a bullpen start today. Arauz has had four straight poor showings including two disasters and IMO needs to perform well tonight to avoid having a decision made to have him continue on.
EGonzalez had his best outing last time out.
I’d like to see Meisinger stretched out. The last bullpen game he pitched 3 stellar innings. If he has a changeup that could play, his fastball/ curve mix could work as a starter.
Meisinger is an interesting guy but right now he is a better fit for the bullpen IMO.
He only has two pro-career starts one for BAL and one with MEM. The Mem game was on 4/28/19 the first of two and was another bullpen start (3.0 clean with 5 Ks). Right now he is the top guy in that Redbird pen.

In 2017, when Arauz was with the Phillies pitching across three levels, he was fine as a starter but spectacularly successful pitching out of the bullpen. I mean, a world-beater.
The numbers in relief: 60.2 IP, 1.48 ERA, sub-2.00 FIP, 59 strikeouts and 8 walks, and 2 homers. (That’s exactly what a terrific future reliever looks like.)
Meanwhile, also in 2017, Jordan Hicks was spectacularly successful as a 20-year-old starting pitcher over the final two months across two A-ball leagues. High strikeouts, low walks, zero home runs, tons and tons of groundballs, and an incredibly efficient 12.8 pitches per inning. (Exactly what a terrific future starter looks like.)
So I’m thinking that perhaps someone in the Redbird front office just got their Aruaz & Hicks files switched. Made the reliever a starter and the starter a reliever, all by mistake. To quote Zach Galifianakis, it was a classic mix-up! (But with no humor.)
You know……just what if Bobby’s take on the Hicks-Aruaz file snafu is dead on correctamundo? Stranger things have happened. You have to wonder how Hicks’ career would look like right now if he had remained a starter? If the kid developed an attitude, he could be the second coming of Bob Gibson…..with a bit more giddyup on the fastball than Bob. What if the Mets had determined that Nolan Ryan was to never leave their bullpen? The quality organizations usually make the correct calls on these sort of major moves.
The precocious Peoria gang had a good collective night tonight. Ivan Herrera had his 5th homer and went 2-4 with 2 RBI and a walk. Gorman went 2-4 with a walk. Malcom Nunez went 3-4 with a walk and 2 RBI. Only Jhon Torres remains cold, going 0-4 although he did draw a free pass.
Pacheco for Peoria has some outrageous strikeout numbers. If he can only get some idea of where his pitches are going. Of course Escobar is way farther along, and much needed by Peoria. I’d expect Escobar to be promoted in June. Also nice to see Nunez get his first 3 hit game.
The Memphis pen has killed the Redbirds this year. Layne, who was terrific last year is pitching horribly. Cruz was pitching well, but has fallen on hard times. At least Cruz is young and has time to improve. Meisinger is probably the only solid reliever.
Nice call, stlcard25! Malcom is indeed coming around. No K’s in his 5 plate appearances is a clear indicator that the young man is starting to get dialed in. The power is coming soon…..very soon.

Hunter Cervenka LP has been okay.Tommy Layne has been horrible this season as mentioned by Card27.No body has jumped up for the Memphis pen and stood out.As inconsistent as Tyler Webb has been I wondered why Cervenka hasn`t gotten a shot.I know it would require a 40- man roster move .I guess the Fo feels Cervenka offers basically the same thing as Webb.All I know is that there has to be a better LH option somewhere than Webb.
