Rajcic had a clunker today giving up a 3 run homer, but Nunez seems have improved control with only 3 walks in his first 9 1/3 innings to go with 13 Ks. He allowed his first hit of the season tonight.

I knew Liberatore and Mautz were starting yesterday, so when I didn’t see either one in the standouts article this morning, I figured hoo boy, lets hope for OKish rather than el stinko.
Liberatore did what he has always done. Be inconsistent and unpredictable. He has a good start, and he has a bad start. Its always been a question of how many of each. We are far enough along with him to know that that pattern seems real unlikely to change. 7 hits and 3 walks in 5.1 is too much traffic. 98 pitches to get through 5.1 is way too inefficient. Its just what we are seeing from the MLB staff and there is no Contreras in Memphis. It would be interesting to know how many 2 strike hits.
Mautz’s start looks very similar, except his middle infield made 4 throwing errors between them. (looks like an Appy League box score from the old days) There were a couple other fielding errors as well. All that will run up your pitch count. But he did give up 5 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings. 83 pitches. If he got rattled, it would be understandable.
You and a lot of other people gscottar. My view is that Liberatore is the same pitcher who was here before. He only started 7 games, but nothing has changed with him. His ERA as a starter was 5.46 and WHIP as a starter was 1.787. Matz’s ERA is 6.39 and WHIP is 1.710. If you like one better than the other I will not argue about it. There is not enough difference to matter.
I see that Walker is playing RF everyday in Memphis. Is that really the correct position for him? It seems to me that if you have one subpar defender in the OF it is better to hide them in LF than RF. Noot is a very good RF and Carlson is a pretty good CF so I think it would make more sense for Walker to be our LF when he comes back up but apparently the Cardinals disagree.
Too bad Liberatore can never get better. Only worse than last year. And his Triple-A improvement this year should be ignored because it isn’t in the majors. After all, he is 23 years old, like a player one year out of college. Using the logic that Walker may be toast at age 20, Liberatore’s expiration date is clearly past. May as well just release him now.

his Triple-A improvement this year should be ignored
7 starts in Memphis this year is not more meaningful than 7 starts in MLB last year. He has looked good in spurts before.
May as well just release him now.
He is presently among the 5 or 6 best starter options we’ve got. My position is he is not better than what we’ve got in the rotation right now, and my opinion is he will continue to be what he is now. I base that upon absense of meaningful improvement to date. I would agree that if he does a season, or big chunk of a season, in AAA with the numbers he has in the first 7 games, that would signify improvement. I do not think we will see that. Rather, I think he will have a string of bad starts just like he had a string of good starts. That has been his pattern.
