There is also a decent chance he could be somewhat less. As stated but ignored repeatedly, there is no need for Burleson now, with the roster spot better used on a player who needs to be protected this winter. His chance will come in 2023.

The last time we went on your merry-go-round about this, your ideas to make room for Burleson were to send down Nootbaar and release Dickerson, both of which would have been mistakes.

The Cards are doing just fine and there is no reason to mess with the offense now.

The next hitter up if/when needed will be Juan Yepez. Over his last 10 games with Memphis, Yepez has hit .342 with two doubles, five home runs, 16 RBI and a 1.221 OPS. He has a roster spot and an MLB track record.

Maybe Burleson will get a spot in the Arizona Fall League. Playing six more weeks would probably be better for his growth anyway.

    OPS –

    Nootbaar – .819
    Dickerson – .755
    Carlson – .704
    O’Neill – .697
    Burleson – .902

Sure it’s AAA, but at least he’s hitting like a corner outfielder should.

Since the AAA All Star break, Burleson has cooled significantly. His .789 OPS and 105 wRC+ is far below his season line.

Since that date, here are the wRC+ for our DH/OFers at the MLB level:

    Pujols 228
    Dickerson 194
    Nootbaar 166
    O’Neill 122
    Donovan 119
    Carlson 85

So while theoretically possible, every OF/DH guy on the roster except one has outhit Burleson one level higher over the stretch run. It’s just not likely that Burleson provides any sort of upgrade right now.

We all have our opinions, 25. As a poster so nicely puts, it’s my “merry-go-round”. Well, you know what? We constantly highlight players of the week, many of whom have a ghost of a chance of ever seeing a major league ballpark. But when a poster brings up a player who is slashing at the highest minor league level for the season .328/.370/.532/.902 with 20 home runs and 86 RBI and only Ks 15% of the time, it’s a “merry-go-round”. Ny the way, when I say “free Alec Burleson” I’m not talking about right now. I’m talking about the AFL and giving him a decent shot to make the Cards in ST 2023.

    Free

I must say that my interpretation of “free player x” is that the team needs to bring the player up, trade them or release them, right now. I have not heard of the connotation that it refers to the end of the season or next year. I agree that Burleson should be given an opportunity next year but that should be based on his performance and the team’s needs, combined.

Okay, let’s give Burleson a shot in the AFL and a chance to make the club coming out of camp next Spring. Is that better, Forsch?

By the way, 25, in August and the early part of September O’Neill has 23 hits in 120 plate appearances and Carlson has 18 hits in 100 plate appearances. That’s 2/3 of our starting outfield in 2022. The other 1/3 was traded.

With all due respect…. IMO Burleson should stay at AAA and then go to AFL so that he goes into ’23 spring training with a positive attitude instead of being seen in STL as a bench warmer and getting little chance of showing what he’s got. Its all about attitude with these young players. Anyway I hate riding on merry go rounds.

I think it was Fri. or Sat. Yepez took the collar and Ked three times. He was ejected after his last AB. Maybe some frustration? Free Yepez.

Well, 14, this is a minor league game thread. So maybe we should highlight guys at the top level of the system yesterday. Both the #3 and #4 hitters in the Memphis lineup had multi hit games. Good to see.

    Last 5 games –

    YP –

    8/31 – 1-3, H/R, 2RBI
    9/1 – 2-4
    9-2 – 2-5, 2B
    9-3 – 0-4
    9/4 – rested

    Last 5 games – 5-16

    EB –

    8/31 – 3-5, 2B, 4RBI
    9/1 – 1-4
    9/2 – rested
    9/3 – 2-4, 2B
    9/4 – 2-4, 2B

    Last 5 games – 8-17

Middle of the lineup is hitting well.
