Baez has that gaudy strikeout rate, but there are glimpses of the talent in there. Bob Reed mentioned that he can’t think of any successful big leaguer who ever ran a 40%+ K rate at any level, which certainly gives me caution.

On another level, Davila looks good. I’ll have to look through Brian’s reports to see if he caught him in action anywhere.

Hard to look into it with such a small sample size with Baez. I’ve never seen a player with a .467 BABIP and a .257 BA either.

I’m just glad to see him playing at this point.

In fairness, Baez’ High-A K rate of 43.2% is over his first 44 plate appearances since making the big jump from rookie to Low-A.

Prior to that, his K rate was 32.6% in the 2022 FCL and 29.5% in the 2021 FCL.

Maybe, just maybe, it will settle down when he settles into the FSL.

FWIW, Joey Gallo had some stops in the minors where he fanned in the low 40’s and when he wasn’t, he was usually in the upper 30’s. Maybe rare, but not unheard of.

Hopefully Baez is working out the kinks and will realize his potential. The Cards are a fine organization for that to happen, no doubt. I have the fear of Tre Fletcher fresh on my mind, I guess.

Graceffo’s last win was mid July and yesterday was his first good outing since then. Are there any theories?

Watch “Zipping” Zane Mills vs Wisconsin tonight. He’s poised to spin a dandy. And speaking of Peoria’s Midwest league, I’m troubled by how well the Cubbies’ South Bend affiliate is doing. They obviously have some quality talent coming down the pike.

Graceffo and McGreevy are pushing 130 innings each in their first full seasons as pros. It can be a big transition to pitch all out every fifth day for six months straight.

Mills with his low K rate reminds me of Woodford. Of course that is turning out better than I expected

Graceffo pitched 120 innings altogether last year. I think the big transition is expecting him to go from pitching NCAA ball in 2021 to AA in 2022.

Liberatore got trashed again today…4-2/3 innings, 7 earned. He simply can’t put together any sort of consistently good results.

    Free Alec Burleson.

Burleson simply does not need to come up yet. Who is he really a sure bet to outperform right now? Carlson, maybe? O’Neill, Nootbaar and Dickerson are all playing well and the team is winning. He’s not going to take DH at bats from Donovan or Albert. He’s not a great defender. He’s fine in Memphis and I’d bet he has a great shot to take Dickerson’s place in 2023.

There’s a chance he could outhit all of our outfielders.
