ParticipantEdgar Manzo was having quite a month for Peoria bullpen. Before last night he had pitched 10.2inn 0ER2H 2BB and got his ERA down to 4.26 from 5.03. He even started a “bullpen game”. Last night he must have been having a terrible day. The Chiefs lost 14-3 in a game that saw Manzo pitch 1.2 innings gave up 8ER and walked 4.He’ll get it back together but talk about one nightmare of a day.
August 23, 2023 at 2:21 pm #232346Your Wednesday night with the Cardinals just got even better 🤩#STLCards RHP Jake Woodford is expected to make an MLB Rehab Start for the Cardinals tonight at Hammons Field!
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. Gates open at 6:05pm.

ParticipantWoodford really dealing tonight!
5 innings
56 pitches
1 hit
0 walks
6 K’s
Get him back up!!!August 24, 2023 at 6:14 am #232374Need to get Woody back up now! There are a number of guys he is better than..Barnes, Lawrence, Rom, Suarez, Waino..LOL. Looks like he tweaked his slider/sweeper to get more swing and miss…!
watched his Springfield rehab last night and looked in control of all 5 inngs. His fastball was on the corners, curve was nice and the sweeper looked like it was sweeping..!
He just needs a little more time to keep it all consistent, once he does that he will be a solid piece of any pitching staff. Plus, he is versatile, can go 1 inng. or start and give you 5-6.August 24, 2023 at 7:39 am #232378Thompson seems to be settling in..!
. Pallante seems to always give up 1 run..?
The month of Aug. he has 9 appearances:
11 inngs.
14 hits
7 runs
3 bb
5 k
era= 5.73August 24, 2023 at 8:05 am #232383The #stlcards system was 2-2 on Wednesday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, 1B Chandler Redmond, hit three solo home runs in Springfield’s win. Other standouts include Ramon Mendoza, Jimmy Crooks, and Jake Woodford. (free) https://t.co/3UYvydLtkv pic.twitter.com/Fac0W7n9tn

ParticipantPeoria’s Crooks II, after his slow start that lasted the first two months of the season, has turned it around this month. The ’22 fourth round switch hitter has put up some very good numbers in August…. .371BA .997 OPS…. to raise his seasonal stats. The 22 y. o. catching prospect could and should get a push up to AA before this year ends. We could have something here.
August 25, 2023 at 6:06 am #232436The #STLCards system went 2-2 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield LF Mike Antico, was a triple shy of the cycle and drove in a career-high six. Other standouts: César Prieto, Thomas Saggese, Jimmy Crooks and Gustavo Rodriguez. https://t.co/lcg71SfwgV pic.twitter.com/UvrwDPheoY

ParticipantI love to see prospects move up in class and improve their numbers. ScottII has increased on his Peoria’s stats nicely…. he was batting .282 with 50SBs in 266ABs. At AA Springfield he is batting .321 with 29SBs in 187ABs. That’s 79 SBs this season. I’ll be watching if he can make it to 100SBs. He was STL 5th rd. pick last season. I would imagine his ETA is ’24.
Also Saggese… a 21 y.o. INF prospect we acquired in the Montgomery trade… was TEX’s 5rd pick in 2020. He was batting .313 in 367ABs with 5HRS… .891OPS. Since coming over he is batting .354 with 7HRS… 1.144OPS in 79 ABs. Nice improvement.
August 25, 2023 at 3:21 pm #232462The DSL and FCL seasons are mercifully over. Good lord, that was dreadful.
August 25, 2023 at 5:26 pm #232467“The DSL and FCL seasons are mercifully over. Good lord, that was dreadful.”
Too true, Bling. Not a single position player on either team can be projected as an MLB starter at this point. Mejia was a disaster, and Samil De La Rosa actually regressed at the same level, which is incredibly rare at his age. And terrible, of course.
Stiveen Rojas pitched well for a 16-year-old in the DSL, and Leonel Sequera (17 in the FCL) only walked one man across 17 innings, but pitchers are so volatile under the best of circumstances that it’s impossible to be very enthused by these micro samples at the lowest professional levels.

Yeah, I would also like to see Crooks challenged with a Double-A promotion, Ny. (Selective sample alert!) Since June 8 he’s hitting .326 in 218 ABs, and better still he’s slugging .560 during the same span. The lefty swinger (Leo Bernal is the switch-hitting backstop in A-ball) is likely a platoon guy long term, but catchers don’t start 140 games these days anyway, so I don’t ding Jimmy Dale much for that. Pair Crooks with a lefty-killing catcher and you’re set. I mean, in twenty years when the Contreras contract expires.
August 25, 2023 at 8:30 pm #232486Why did Palm Beach play a double header today and why is Memphis playing a double header tomorrow?
August 26, 2023 at 7:40 am #232497The #STLCards system was 3-1 on Friday as Palm Beach won two. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, 2B Thomas Saggese, hit two home runs with four RBI in Springfield’s win. Other standouts include Jose Alvarez, Hancel Rincon and Gerardo Salas. August 26, 2023 at 8:39 am #232500Saggese has had a good year in AA, before and after the trade. I don’t know about defensively, but offensively he’s done all there is to do there.
August 26, 2023 at 7:56 pm #232538Roby looked great tonight for Springfield. 6 Ks in 3 innings. Live arm. Has 4 plus pitches or better. Double plus on his curve.
August 27, 2023 at 6:38 am #232563On Saturday, the #STLCards system went 2-2. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, LF Chase Pinder, hit a grand slam in Memphis’ Game 1 win. Other standouts include Nick Raposo, Tekoah Roby, R.J. Yeager and Zane Mills. (free) https://t.co/BwtktBB3dG pic.twitter.com/xQPdb0KasK

August 27, 2023 at 1:03 pm #232601Davis has 5 rbis and Lin had 4 scoreless hitless innings for Palm Beach. Lin gave up 4 walks, but had 6 Ks.

Thanks for the update, C-27. You motivated me to check Tekoah’s season numbers. (Having a Tekoah & Tink rotation in a couple of years sounds pretty cool, yes?)
Roby has pitched in 11 games now. In the first three he allowed 21 hits and 11 extra base knocks in just 14 innings. But in the eight games since, he’s logged 36 IP and permitted 29 hits — again, with 11 going for extra bases. Big improvement. Also, he’s walked only a single batter in each of his most recent eight appearances (with a nifty 39-to-8 K/BB ratio).
He feels like a dandy acquisition. I’ve seen the footage and have little doubt of Tekoah’s physical ability. But I had to wonder why with all this alleged talent his ERAs have been so underwhelming. Well, here it is.
This year with the bases empty, he’s given up a .692 OPS. Not great, but fine for a 21-yr-old in AA.
This year with men on base? He’s surrendered an unsightly .877 OPS. Yikes. And folks, it was the exact same thing last year. Empty, .678. Men on, .902. Maybe it’s a matter of composure, maybe a difference pitching from the windup versus stretch, I dunno. I suppose there’s an outside chance it’s just a meaningless double-fluke, but I wouldn’t bet on that one.
Whatever it is, if the Bird instructors can (mostly) fix it, and provided he stays generally healthy of course, he looks like a good starter or very good reliever going forward. We need all of those we can get. And then some.
August 28, 2023 at 8:12 am #232656The #stlcards system went 4-0 on Sunday with two walk-offs including a historic comeback in Springfield. TCN’s Player of the Day, Chase Davis, doubled 2x, walked 2x and drove in six for Palm Beach. Other standouts: Juniel Querecuto, Aaron Antonini, Jimmy Crooks & Chen-Wei Lin. pic.twitter.com/1djYH2bmkt

August 28, 2023 at 1:21 pm #2326801B Chandler Redmond of Double-A Springfield is the Texas League Player of the Week. Four of his eight hits against Corpus Christi left the park to go with eight runs scored and seven RBI. Redmond, 26, is our #43 #STLCards prospect. pic.twitter.com/MlnfkYSuTM

August 28, 2023 at 3:25 pm #232698I am intrigued by Angel Cuenca. He has lost time to injury, but appears to be pitching better lately. He throws 95/96, but I’d take him as a long shot prospect.
August 28, 2023 at 3:26 pm #232699Any chance Hjerpe pitches again this year?
August 28, 2023 at 3:42 pm #232702Yes. I spoke with Hjerpe about that recently. Details here.
