Deniel is a guy I have been meaning to post about for a while. His surface level stata look fine, but the data underneath shows Deniel has really improved. He had contact issues like year despite the strong BA and was swinging and missing quite a bit. But this year he has cut down the K% by 9.3%. The underlying data shows clearly why too. He is making contact at a much higher rate now. His Contact% overall has went up over 8% and he has cut his swinging strike rate way down from 12.1 to 8.6%
His power seems to be returning which is nice to see. Hamate injuries sap power for quite a while and if he has really improved his contact ability while retaining his excellent power, he will be a very exciting prospect.
I think many have been penciling Jesus Baez in as the (hopeful) 3B of the future, but Ortiz is making a case for himself as well. I’m glad to see that he’s hitting lately. Those hand injuries really put a damper on things.
You’re both right. Ortiz is a possibility (along with Gurevitch). But Ortiz has been a relatively poor defender. I haven’t watched much of him this season given how late he came back from injury to have any real thoughts on whether defense has improved. Any of you?
Santana appears to be one of the best relief prospects in the minors. He has only given up 2 runs at the AA level. Much like Eagen and Ragland he appears he may be on track to be in St Louis next year sometime.

Good grief. Fixing something that’s not broke is never a good idea.
I am curious if the FO would allow/want Doyle and Rodriguez to participate in both Springfield and Memphis playoff runs. Their regular seasons end one week apart, September 13th and 20th respectively. If both teams go to the playoffs there may be time to add the 2 prospects. It would be great experience for them. Rodriguez and Bernal could alternate catching much like they likely will next season. Springfield has yet to make the playoffs, but the had a 4 game lead in their division when I checked last.
Since the Springfield team is not owned by the Cardinals anymore, their owners probably want their own branding and full merchandizing $$$.
I doubt Springfield will give up any more core players until their season ends. They’re playing very well, should win their division in 2H and be the favorite to take the league crown.
On the other hand, Memphis has little momentum right now, but they serve as the reserves for St. Louis. So the longer they play, the better.
JMO, but dropping a few Springfield standouts onto the Memphis roster during the playoffs could be perceived as a slight to the players who’ve been in Triple-A all season and who would get pushed off the active roster at that time. Maybe if there is an opening due to an injury…
We talked about Sandro Santana on the podcast. I likened his situation to Gastelum’s at this time last year.
Like Brian said, it is a move for merchandise. It works if they choose a mascot people like and as the Cardinals they aren’t getting merchandise sells as people just buy the MLB team merch. Teams that have been really successful with creating a brand draw in significant merchandise revenue. The Rocket City Trash Pandas have been by far the most successful at a brand creation and people that don’t even like baseball all over the country like their merchandise and buy it.
I wouldn’t expect a typical name. Expect something odd that probably most of the forum won’t like as it is targeted toward younger fans.
Not everyone is liking the name change.

Molina was having a very good game before the rain delay. 9 Ks of 19 batters faced with no walks in 5 innings. That is more of what I was expecting of him. Pitch count was good at 72 pitches as well.
A few people will oppose, but it realistically won’t matter I expect. It comes down to the financials and their thought is the money to be gained outweighs the cons of some people people upset and not spending money, but unless those people were going to games, they likely weren’t helping the club.
I dont have any problem with the name change. I can understand them wanting some new buzz and the money that new merchandise can bring. I wish them luck.
I agree with Willie. I have no issue. If it creates a little excitement, then great. It’s still the same team in the same organization.
I get that the world loves the Rocket City Trash Pandas and the like. It just seems to me that the game isn’t being taken seriously. Will it all soon be like the Savannah Bananas?
If you were an aspiring player, would you be proud to wear a uniform that says, “Trash Pandas” on the front? It reminds me of my days playing beer league softball.
Springfield has already had the Cashew Chickens and Ozarks Snipe Hunters as “alternate identities”. I can’t wait to see how they top them with their new “permanent” name. Maybe they can swing an endorsement at the same time and call themselves the Springfield Bass Pros. Think of the cross-promotional opportunities. New mascot: Big Mouth Billy Bass!

Eagen has been really good since coming over in the trade from Arizona. He struck out 11 last night. The lefty reliever Santana has very good as well. Peete hit 2 homers. Only Peoria is under .500.
5 years ago we’d have been discussing guys like Brayden Smith or or Brandt Thompson as top 20 prospects. We would be hoping and praying they may one day make an impact. Now they aren’t even top 50 (or maybe are fringe top 50) due to all the acquisitions of talent. We’ve had a few high end guys come through (Winn, Walker, Burleson, Gorman, etc) but we didn’t have much depth behind it and certainly lacked exciting starting pitching.
Now, watching this Springfield team dominate its competition most nights because of all the talent amassed on that team gives a lot of hope that the future should get better. That lineup contains Raniel Rodriguez, Jesus Baez, Tai Peete, Jack Gurevitch, Deniel Ortiz, Won bin Cho, Josiah Ragsdale, and Tre Richardson. It’s the AA version of Murderers Row. And if that’s not bad enough for opponents, they have to hit against Doyle, Eagan, Franklin or if they are lucky enough, only a quality starter like Aita or Brayden Davis. It’s a fun group that will likely all be in Memphis next year.
Congratulations to Owen Brewer Henne on his first professional homer last night. It was a majestic rocket to left…..107mph off the bat. Off to a slow start, but this kid is a born hitter. We’ll be hearing much more from young Owen in ’27.
