Apparently he is going to opt out of his contract with San Diego after the 2023 season. I am wondering why he would announce that now? Seems like that might cause some internal problems for San Diego. Why wouldn’t he wait until the 2023 season is over?
Did I miss something?

That is what Jacob DeGrom did last year. Announced a year in advance that he was opting out. It is kind of strange.
I guess he can always change his mind, so no loss either way for himself. Maybe the logic is if teams “know” he is committed to opting out, they will plan to secure/retain the enormous pile of dry powder needed to sign him.
Not that it means anything, but I couldn’t think of anyone ever named Manny who had ever played for the Cardinals. That struck me as highly unusual, so I did a little searching and all I could come up with was Manny Aybar who I now remember as a RHP for the Cardinals from the late 90’s. At any rate, we certainly don’t need the services of Machado, but I don’t think it would at all hurt for the Redbird braintrust to be always on the look-out for anyone named Manny who can play a little bit…I like that name and a player who goes by it just may be what’s needed on the roster to make a deep run into the post-season…Especially if his last name is O’Sullivan.
Seems like he isn’t happy there. Like someone said, gives other times time to make moves if interested.

Exactly this. It’s just a low-class move by Machado to publicly extort a long, long contract out of the Padres. He’s openly admitted his decision was driven by the offseason signings that have gone through other players’ age 40+ seasons. I have little doubt the Padres will announce a lengthy deal for Manny before Opening Day. Best guess, 11 or 12 years and a dollar more than the Aaron Judge deal.
They’ve seen his best. He’s got maybe 3 or 4 prime years left and then the slide, which may or may not be steep. That payroll money will buy just as much value next winter. They may offer him the big one though, and end up regretting it as much as the Yankees will end up regretting the Judge contract.
Machado is probably a Mets lock for 2024. Maybe Cohen can sign both Machado and Ohtani next winter so he can have a $400M payroll.
Manny Lee, who is best remembered for his time on the Blue Jays in late 80’s, suited up for the Cardinals in 1995.
Haha!…I’ll be darned. I didn’t remember him, Mrperkins, but I just looked him up and he indeed had 1 AB and 1 hit when he played for the Cardinals for a BA of 1.000… And he also came around to score! See? We need more of these guys named Manny!
There was a guy named Manny something or other who was a Cardinals minor leaguer in the 70s. I used to see him when we went to games in Springfield, Illinois. It was our AAA team. Seams like he was a fixture there for a good while. Played in MLB for somebody later on. I just asked my brother and he remembers the guy too.
The first “Manny’s” I recall were Manny Jimenez of the Kansas City Athletics, and Manny Mota. Those were from baseball cards. The Mota card that comes to mind is his 1963 Topps I believe, which was one of those we hated as a kid – the infamous “no hat” card.🤨
Seems like Manny Aybar was a fairly highly touted prospect for us when he was in the upper minors.
As for Machado, I would think making millions a year and being in San Diego is a great gig. Most of us would likely want to keep that going. Guess it is all in the perspective though.
There’s no question that Manny Mota belongs the HOF of baseball names simply because of the reason you cited, BikeMike. At times, Mota seemed to occupy every pack of cards of which that I sacrificed a dime when I was a young boy hoping to find that Carlton or Clemente card once I’d ripped open the wrapper…Haha! At any rate, you can’t go wrong with a prospect named Manny…
Haha! I just took a look at Mota on BR. Manny had a 20 year Big League career and a .304 lifetime in which he collected only a bit over 4200 PA’s. He’d probably be stacking paper on a pallet today.
bikemike’s post, with mentions of Manny and Aybar and Jimenez, got me to thinking way back in 1999 when I lived just across the river in O’Fallon IL. I seemed to remember Aybar twirling a no-hitter for the Cards, but after checking, it was Jose Jimenez. I saw a picture of Aybar hugging Jimenez in the post-game celebration. It was a 1-0 win over none other than Randy Johnson. And Randy sounds a lot like Manny, sort of.
Manny Trillo was a nice little player with the Phillies and Cubs.
I think there was also a Manny Sanguillen with the Pirates.
Sanguillen was a fun player to watch. A great bad ball hitter IIRC, but a good hitter regardless. Good for average that is, but today’s analytics might not view him as favorably. Don’t know for sure, I’d have to check.
Went to see the Cards play at PNC park and my son and I decided to grab something from Manny’s BBQ. And there he was, Sanguillen was there smiling at the customers as they came through. We had seen the same thing earlier a few times with Boog’s BBQ at Camden Yards. Boog was quite the gregarious greeter as fans strolled through his serving line. Wonder who had the idea first?
