Mo has said they intend to retool not rebuild.
So, more trades are coming and the off season will have to be the busiest for the Cards in recent history.
The line up is fine but (so far) the 2024 pitching staff is worse – if that’s possible.
The bullpen is a disaster with the best ERA being Helsley’s 3.24 and most of them in the mid 4s or over 5. I think I saw a stat last week – 48 save opportunities, 24 blown saves. That is an eye popping stat.
The current starting rotation is Mikolas, Matz, Wainwright, Hudson, and Liberatore?
Matz has been great since the break and Mikolas is a solid #3-4 but do we really trust Matz?
Where are 3 ML starters going to come from for 2024 – one of them the ‘ace’? Free agency has to be the answer because I’m not aware there’s anyone ready at Memphis to be a #1-2 next year and remember – this is not a rebuild….

Blake and I are already discussing this. We will do another comparison article to re-rank and include all the new additions once the deadline passes.
P.S. The new MLB Pipeline prospect rankings by definition are overly optimistic on the new additions. I find it odd they moved the trade guys into their rankings immediately but for some reason, they have not yet included the 2023 draft picks. We did the latter two weeks ago.

The Jays already have a closer so Hicks will probably move back into a setup role. You can bet when he reaches free agency, that he will be looking for a ninth-inning role.
If he stays healthy I would like to see him come back to us. But in the Spring Helsley, again if healthy, will be vying for the closer role as well.
The only way I would even consider trying to bring Hicks back would be if, in his 20-25 innings he is going to pitch for Toronto, he walks five (5) or less.
I am tired of yelling “THROW A STRIKE ROSENTHAL!” every time Hicks came into the game. Glad that’s over.

Unless he ends the season on the IL, which would not be a shocking development, in which case he will mostly be just looking for a job.

Adam Kloffenstein, STL (22): Part of the return for Jordan Hicks, Kloffenstein is a big right-hander with a limited repertoire. He tunnels a sinker and slider in a way reminiscent of Brady Singer and Brad Keller. He has a solid feel for command and projects to eat innings in an uninspiring way. He’s pitched to a 3.24 ERA in 89 Double-A frames.
I find it amusing all the crying about Hicks….yes he had some good games……yet this was a guy probably 75% of the fans wanted to dump.
I think Kloffenstein will be a reliever. It’s understandable they want to keep him as a starter in AAA to see what they’ve got. But his sinker and slider are both out pitches and he could be another Gallegos like find.
