There’s a religious group on almost every major league team. A Bible study group. The Cardinals group today includes Waino, Goldy, and Edman. Matheny was involved when he was here. That’s the extent of it.

The 3 players Matheny locked horns with were 2 outfielders and a catcher. The outfielders are gone.
Both traded away. The catcher is still here. Matheny was his mentor in early years and wanted him to rest now and then. The catcher took exception and it came out publicly.

I always thought that Matheny’s success was the direct result of the winning momentum established during the LaRussa years. The momentum eventually petered out and Matheny got exposed.
