Interesting thought on least favorite Cardinal. I don’t really have one – I tend to like all our guys, and usually like them after they have moved on.
Gibson was pretty surly – probably moreso than Flaherty, but it was part of his pitching persona so everyone seemed to respect it.
I guess as least favorite as far as an exception I would put Jason Heyward up there pretty high. We made him a huge offer and he bolted for the hated rivals for a little less overall. That is a pretty bad snub.
Brett Cecil was not my favorite, but the poor guy just was not as good as the deal we gave him so I can’t fault him too much.
I am glad Flaherty is gone. But because is better for him to be away from the intense dislike fans have for him. Hope the best for him.
My recollection of Bob Gibson was that his demeanor consisted of an affable and happy guy who confined his surly scowl for when he walked on to the playing field to take his turn every 4th day. I also recall him as an all time great starting pitcher who never gave any indication that he was dissatisfied with being in StL.
After his short period of elite performance, Jack just wasn’t the same. Could’ve capitalized but chose not to. As they say, Jack bet on Jack, but lost — at least so far. Seems like a hard guy to make happy and not a good fit. Glad Mo got something for him while he could.
I think Jack’s shoulder is still a concern. He has usually thrown well this year with good velocity, but without the command he had before the issues.
Templeton certainly was immature while here. He matured later in life though and I believe he is a good guy these days. Similar with Darryl Strawberry. Immature as a younger guy, which is true for a lot of us, but really matured and does great things for the community.
Flaherty on the mound for Baltimore this after noon. Through 4 innings he’s up 2-0.
4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 K. 52 pitches.
Flaherty had some trouble in the sixth but got out of it will just 1 run scored. He’s done for the day, final line: 6 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 8 K. 92 pitches. game score 66.
For the BJs DeJong is 0-3 with 2 Ks.
More important is that he records the W and the O’s add a half game to their 1st place ALE lead. Looking at the line score tells me Jack worked with an uncomfortably slim lead until his day was done after the 6th and the Orioles later stretched it out in the final two innings for a 6-1 final.
Nice Orioles debut for Jack. Gotta feel good pitching in games that mean something again.
Sounds like DeJong is same ole-same ole.
For some of you who wanted him gone. Let’s see how FA plays out. He did say he wouldn’t mind a reunion even if he was traded. They appear to have a couple openings due to some starters not being ready. So they’ll need to go out in FA to fill a void or two. We’ll see!
Kahlil Greene is up there for me.
Unfortunately the better prospects seem to be the infielders where we are pretty solid. None of the pitchers excite me. Mostly typical Mo picks. Guys withoutsolid minor league numbers who he expects to perform better ine major leagues.
At best don’t see much help for 2024
Interesting tidbit from Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic. The Cardinals and Rays had a deal to trade Flaherty but it fell apart over a medical issue with one of the players involved. So the Cards dealt him to Baltimore instead, where he has struggled so badly he might not make the playoff rotation.

Baltimore can’t be happy with Flaherty at this point.
Unless he pulls a Jekyll & Hyde, Flaherty may end up on a minor league contract somewhere next season having to ‘prove it’.
As said above, Flaherty may very well have pitched himself off the playoff roster.
Flaherty with another terrible start tonight! We didn’t get much for him but at least we got of him and his potential salary! God knows what we would have paid him to be mediocre or worse! Just look at the 37 million we have spent on Wainwroght and Mikolas! SMH!
