Found his comments interesting. After Schildt, we know that Mozeliak (sp) doesn’t like being questioned.

Does not look at all like a threat to opt out. Sounds like a guy passionate to win the division.

The thing is too, you opt out and you have no guarantee a team that is talented will be interested.

With the talent our club has, I think we will win the division. But the front office could make better use of the players they have, and possibly make a deal for some help.

I personally think it should concern management. Arenado wants to win the division. He wants to be more competitive vs good teams. Anybody with a baseball IQ can see we aren’t that far away from being a team that can easily win this division and possibly really compete day in day out with good teams but we need some more help especially on the pitching end. Bullpen and probably starting. If management just decides to stay pat or goes out and just gets another prayer guy, it will show him that the Cardinals aren’t serious about really trying to win. So if he opts out, he doesn’t really lose anything. He still is going to get paid. Worse he ends up on a team like the Cardinals, more likely a real contender gets him. I wouldn’t blame him one bit. So I think ownership needs to own up to it’s responsibilities.

I don’t get the sense that Arenado will opt out but he did send a fairly clear signal to the front office that this team needs reinforcements.

Let’s face it Mo hasn’t made a significant deadline move since 2014. I am in believe it when I see it mode.

They definitely need to do something or at a minimum, Arenado is going to demand additional years. Talk is talk and money is much louder.

An addition of Snell for Bader or TON and trading for MadBum would put this team over the top in the division, and wouldn’t cost the farm. With the “Albert Revenue” they can definitely afford it and then some.

    Snell – Roughly 5M left in 22 and $16.6 in 23
MadBum – Is much trickier, his contract is $23 in 22 and 23 and $14 in 24. $5M from 21-23 is paid in 25-27 so basically he’s at $7.5 left this year and $18 in 23 and then $14 in 24. As long as AZ picks up the “deferred” money and maybe chip in a little for 2023.

NA is looking at next year when it will be him and Goldy and a bunch of noobs and low hanging fruits whose performances have been mostly up and down when they can manage to stay off the IL. He knows that the rotation will not heal itself from within and there is probably no catcher for next year in the system. Neither the pitching nor the hitting seems up to competing outside of the weak Central Division. I don’t know what he will do, but I bet his definition of competitive is not aligned with Mo’s.

The Cards rank 8th in MLB in runs scored, and are only 10 runs away from ranking 4th. Even with TO, HB, and YM out. Doesn’t seem like it with all the shutouts. The problem is inconsistency. You get that with youth like Donovan, Gorman, Carlson, Yepez, etc. The key is to get Yadi back in there hitting .250 or so, for TO to return to 2021 form and give protection to Arenado, and for Edman to get out of his slump.

On the pitching side, the staff ranks 10th overall in ERA and 18th in WHIP. With Flaherty and Matz out, with miserable performances from VerHagen, Wittgren, and McFarland, and with the shunning of Woodford.
At the deadline, they need to pick up both a serviceable starter and a serviceable reliever.

BC, why not two starters that would be cheap in talent to not tax the BP and Pallante becomes the 6th-8th inning guy they desperately need? I hope he’s a starter long term but “innings limits” and “needs to build up innings” etc are terms that come to mind.

Good for him for speaking out. That is what leaders do. Whether it will change anything is highly debatable, however. In my opinion, the odds of Arenado opting out went from less than 1% to less than 5%. No matter the number, some will make it look like 90% because they are frustrated with the FO/ownership. This ain’t Colorado where they lose 90+ games.

I don’t why anyone think that he opts out.

If Arenado wants to win the division then I suggest he starts to play better. Specifically, hit better. He’s failed in so many important situations this year I cannot count them all. If he was hitting .330 with 25 homeruns and 75 rbi’s at this point then I could understand this better.

Granted the Cards need a #1 pitcher since Flaherty has not worked out. And they could use another bat and a bullpen arm.

Was that a joke rat? 4.9 B-WAR puts him on pace for 7-8.

It would really be interesting if Arenado could be specific on what he thinks the Cards needs are. And then to see what MO’s verbal response would be.

I DON’T GIVE A SH!T WHAT THOSE ANALYTICS AND METRICS AND NUMBERS INDICATE!!!!

I WATCH THE GAMES AND I’VE SEEN HIM FAIL MANY TIMES WITH MY OWN EYES!!!

I TRUST MY EYES MORE THAN I DO SOME STUPID ANALYTICAL NUMBER!!!

Rats – He’s clearly one of the best all around third basemen in the game. Maybe all time.

I agree bccran. But he has indeed failed at the plate in quite a few important situations this year. That cannot be disputed. I have seen it with my own eyes.

If he would have performed better this year at the plate we might be in a better position than what we are. Rather than talking about how this team needs to make some moves to get better he might be better off kicking himself in the a$$ because that would certainly help.

I’m sure he’s already kicking himself, Rats. He’s super competitive,
and probably his own worst critic.

I don’t think Arenado will opt out nor do I want him to, however, I don’t think it would be the end of the world if he did. Gorman becomes the everyday 3B, Donovan becomes the everyday 2B, then spend the freed up $30M/year on a number 1 starter.

Arenado has had a really good year. He isn’t the issue. Has he failed at times, yes, so had goldy. Bottom line is none of these guys are prime Albert pujols so expecting them to be is just absurd. Bottom line, his numbers are fine. He isn’t the problem. Lack of good pitching depth is.

Arenado has a .883 ops in high leverage situations, tied with Donovan this season for second highest ops behind Goldy.

If you believe the all caps narrative above, then Donovan hasn’t been clutch either.

In order to agree to the trade, Arenado request the additional opt out (end of 2022) be added to his contract. And now he’s requesting some reinforcements. Who knows what indications exactly the top brass have given to Arenado about commitment to being a serious championship contender, but you know this is in play. If Mo half steps through another round of deadline moves, Arenado will probably feel he’s been misled again. I don’t think it matters too much if he’s on a 70-win team or an 85-win maybe/maybe not wildcard team. Neither is what he wants at this stage of his career.

Were you in a coma the first month or so of the season?

Maybe his back is sore from the load he had to carry when Goldschmidt, Dylan and and TO were hitting a buck fifty the first month or so. No one cares about that now.

I mean I’m sorry that he’s not the 2nd coming of Micheal Jack Schmidt or Scotty Rolen but this guy is pretty good. He’s even exceeded my expectation this season. Just cause he’s choked away a few abs in money time doesn’t mean he’s not had an impact on the season. Where the hell would they be without him?

And for those saying no big deal if he opts out. You’ll see the difference with Gorman at 3rd struggling to hit .240 and making 30 errors at 3rd. Sure he might hit 35 homers but he’ll drive in only 75 rbi and K 190 times and we’ll be roughly even in the runs scored category. We’ll be pissing and moaning how the defense has taken a step back and the offense is even more hot and cold than it is now and we’ll be looking up at the Phillies Milwaukee, Giants and Miami in the standing and crying how we need to make a few moves that’ll never happen. lol

Arenado is a great player and good teammate both on and off the field.
We’re very fortunate to have this very probable future Hall of Famer.

That may be true but in my scenario we would also be picking up a $30M top of the rotation ace, which this team desperately needs and would change the dynamic dramatically.

Cardinals go out and sign a top of the rotation ace. When have they ever done that.
