I don’t recall a solitary tout regarding Edman. He’s vastly exceeded any expectations.

    I do.

Edman hit over .300 in a little over half a year in his rookie season of 2019. He hit .304 with 11 homeruns, 7 triples, 15 stolen bases. Expectations were high at that point.

He was a 6th round pick. No touts with Edman. I’d never heard of him prior to his debut at age 24 in June of ’19. He was a nobody.

Probably be the player whose last name starts with B – for now – if such a thing is to happen.

When Edman graduated from our Top 50, in July 2019, he was ranked 10th in the system.

Ranked 10th in what system? By the close of July of 2019 he’d played in almost 50 Big League games.

At that time, Edman was the 10th ranked prospect in the Cardinals system according to our rankings here at The Cardinal Nation. In the next month after he reached 130 MLB ABs, he graduated from our list.

Oh okay, BW. I didn’t know how that worked. In any case, I’d never heard of Tommy Edman before he emerged on to the Big League scene in 2019. I don’t remember any hype at all. The only Tommys I’d ever heard of was Tommy Herr and the great Tommy Lawless…Haha!

There is a lot of time before next year to see how young players progress and how vets perform throughout the year, so it is still way too early to say who for sure is the best 1B option. I also wouldn’t get my hopes up on FA players as it takes 2 to tango, and I don’t see Stl as a very attractive city for many FAs. Stl at least has the legacy and reputation with it, so there may be some players attracted by that, but we as fans obviously have no insight.

I specifically wouldn’t want to touch Pete Alonso and that horrible contract he is going to get as everything about his profile says he will age poorly. He will also likely be a big overpay of 6-7 years in the $150-$180 million range.

Christian Walker is interesting and the Cardinals should certainly do their due diligence with him, but again we would have to attract him. They shouldn’t go more than 3 or 4 years with options.

I wouldn’t feel great about a Burly/Baker platoon for 1B. I just don’t see Baker ever hitting in MLB and is a AAAA type player. Burly is okay, but I don’t feel great about him as a full time 1B or DH unless he shows he really can hit for power this year as he simply does not walk. He has been hitting nice lately, but I need to see it over the full year and with some power.

I doubt Contreras or Walker are moved to 1B. Contreras has done a good not great job at C, but Herrera doesn’t look like it to me behind the plate. Walker I think can actually be an average RF so why waste him at 1B.

Gorman could be moved to 1B as his offensive game profiles for the position. It does allow Edman to be a 2B again, but we have to see with the rest of the year if Siani still looks like a starting CF or Scott develops into it.

Trades are the other option, but who knows what the market looks like. Mo could try to make a splash like he has with Goldy and Arenado in the past and trade for someone like Vlad Jr. to sign to an extension. Vlad will have a decent prospect cost and high $ ($25 mill arb probabl), but he certainly would get the fans attention. Other guys like Josh Naylor and Yandy Diaz could be options that Mo maybtarget. Or targeting a young prospect MLB ready from another org like Bal.

At one time I thought Walker would be our future first baseman, but they have groomed him for the outfield so I don’t know. Plus he looks to be a year or two away now.

We need the year to play out to have a better idea. Right now it would seem to be Burly or maybe Contreras gets moved there. But with Contreras you have a guy who has never played there (as far as I know), so there would be some growing pains.

I wouldn’t move Contreras to 1B unless we were sure that Herrera can do the job defensively. We would be downgrading two spots defensively in that scenario.

It is ironic that Contreras got benched for 10 days last year because of defense but he really isn’t viewed that way now, not to mention that he is also the best hitter in our lineup. We need him back soon.

He sometimes has trouble corraling the 59 ft. breaking pitch, but he’s as difficult to run on as anyone. I recall when he was a Cub, I always thought it was a bad idea to attempt a SB.

The issue is we have a bunch of players that profile as 1B/DH IMO or will be. Contreras, Walker, Gorman and Burleson. Something has to give. Im sure that the Contreras injury has the brass thinking of a position change sooner than they wanted. I don’t think they signed him to catch his entire career.

My bet is Walker. 6’6 and while improving his OF defense would be the likely choice if he can get his bat back to where it profiled.

They aren’t signing an impact FA bat. Don’t forget Gray’s contract goes up next year. They’ll let Goldschmidt go and my guess is they’ll add or keep one of the starter and bring a guy up from the minors. They may also add a veteran presence to the bench. I don’t think they’ll wow us at all.

Those thinking about moving Contreras to 1B, Herrera has thrown out 2 of 29 base stealers. That’s probably a big part of why Contreras was hired. There are still some pretending that Herrera can be an every day catcher.

I can’t find the trade thread so I’ll post this here. I’ve been seeing some Goldy to Houston for some pitching prospects speculation. Maybe Burly needs to keep that firstbaseman’s mitt oiled up.

The trade thread is second from top. In the orange-ish (pinned) section).

Houston is six games under .500. They are even further back than the Cardinals.

Maybe Burly needs to keep that firstbaseman’s mitt oiled up.

This comment should have been left off the post, if your post is truly about Goldschmidt.
