My guess is that Boras, himself, told Buster Olney to say that Montgomery wants to play for a small market team. Olney didn’t simply run into Montgomery at the gym and Montgomery happened to mention that he’d like to play in St. Louis (or Texas). Many writers/pundits are prone to give us fake news if it can serve their interests. Is it really just a coincidence that Sonny Gray goes down, and Montgomery starts pining about small market teams? It looks like a ‘you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours’ sort of thing. Olney goes on a New York talk show and says Montgomery wants to play in St. Louis…..then, when Montgomery finally signs somewhere, Olney gets to be the first to find out and report it.

If Monty wants something like 6/150 how many “small market” teams are going to pay that? Not many I would think.

By the way, I do not consider Texas or STL to be small market. Mid market at least but that is a different topic.

The bottom line is that I don’t think the Cardinals can sign Monty and avoid the CBT unless they trade other salary. Seems like too many moving parts for BDW and Mo. They are done for this offseason.

I wanted Thompson as SP5, but the FO likes him as SP6 depth, understandably.

If Zack gets 20 GS as SP6 filling in for others, double-headers, etc.; I expect him to out pitch one of the AARP5 we have lined up.

Gray is first in line to possibly donate to Thompsons IP fund. I’d like to count Thompson as part of the 2025 rotation, if he is effective this season, but he will need the 2024 IP to earn consideration.

JJ, Mo seems to have made it clear that he wants starters who can reliably turn in quality starts. Go 6+ and give us a chance. Every 5 days. No more 4-5 inning wonders.

There’s a difference between the recent roster renovation, and the actual rebuilding of the pitching pipeline.

I like Thompson as well – and Libby. Heck, I would have just put those two in the rotation this year rather than bring in old guys. But management was big on the “lack of veteran leadership” thing and believes that was a prime factor in last year’s meltdown.

The Rangers are not a small market team. They’ve just acted like it at times.

I think Boston is still the play here. This all could be agent speak to Olney to for the Red Sox’s hand.

I have always preferred to sign Clevinger. His career numbers are very good.

    The stat geeks say otherwise.

Oh and he’s boys with Trevor Bauer and had his own questions away from the diamond. Might be another reason teams are staying away.
