    This team ain’t got no face.

    Winn? Wait five or six years and ask again.

    And then only if he has lost that scraggly little toothbrush on his chin.

    Check out this data from the Cardinals. How can you have a face of the franchise when your best player is someone new each year for 14 years in a row?

    I find this nothing short of amazing….

    The Cardinals are the only Major League team to have a different player lead their club in Baseball Reference’s Wins Above Replacement in every season since 2011:

    Masyn Winn (4.3 in 2024);
    Willson Contreras (3.4 in 2023);
    Nolan Arenado (7.7 in 2022);
    Tyler O’Neill (6.1 in 2021);
    Paul Goldschmidt (2.1 in 2020);
    Jack Flaherty (5.9 in 2019);
    Miles Mikolas (5.3 in 2018);
    Tommy Pham (6.2 in 2017);
    Carlos Martínez (6.1 in 2016);
    Jason Heyward (6.9 in 2015);
    Adam Wainwright (6.4 in 2014);
    Matt Carpenter (6.6 in 2013);
    Yadier Molina (7.2 in 2012);
    Albert Pujols (5.3 in 2011)

    The guy Denton is slobbering over is 3rd lowest in 14 years. Winn is an exciting young player, but give me a break. He’s not a big star or a dynamic presence in the lineup. Not yet anyway. He is one of the tiny handful who has not been disappointing this year. I am interested to see what his sophomore season will look like.

    Face of the franchise? I whined profusely about his performance this year. I feel a little embarrassed.

    Winn is not far from being a face of the franchise. Based on the above article posted by KCB, I’d say that Wetherholt will one day be a face of the franchise, and maybe Scott II, although I really like Siani in centerfield and I don’t think he’s reached his ceiling yet. BTW, not that it really matters for now, but I’d like to see Wetherholt playing some third base in the minors.

    GC, good to see you still kickin’ around here. Glad you found another player to root for! Hopefully Saggese can be as productive as your past favorite.

    I am hoping that soon the face of the franchise will be Chaim Bloom.

    Right now the Cardinal manager is the face. It’s the same sort of face I used to see at the circus when I was a young kid.

    The face of the franchise is an empty seat.

    I’m expecting big things from Suggese, too. But I can’t say too much about it because I’m holding my breathe while I’m waiting for some kind of breakout.

    Hence left his last start for Springfield after he got the first four outs of the game. This kid could also be a face of the franchise one day. I wish someone would explain what’s going on with him. This is just a guess, and I’ll readily admit that my guesses are only right maybe 30-40% of the time. But I’m wondering if they’re just babying Hence while waiting for him to, literally, grow up. By ‘grow up’ I mean that when they drafted him he was listed at 5’11”, and now they list him at 6’1″. If that’s true maybe he’s just, literally, experiencing growing pains. I know this theory is far fetched. But so far there has not been a reporter who has been able to ferret out the real story about what is going on with Hence.
