John Denton of the official team website is really, really excited about Masyn Winn. Here is the conclusion of his most recent article:

“It’s a drive that has made Winn the face of the Cardinals – today, tomorrow and for years to come.”

    In your opinion…

    1) Does the Cardinals franchise currently have “a face”?
    2) Has Winn earned that label?
    3) If not Winn, who is the “face”?
    4) Or is this just happy talk?

    1. Yes. Arenado and Goldschmidt (For better or worse, they are the players most non-Cardinals fans know when you say “Cardinals.”)
    2. No. (Encouraging rookie year, but the sample size is still small. See: Walker, Jordan–2023)
    3. See answer to #1.
    4. Yes. (I.e., premature, but it gives Denton something to write about.)

Yeah, Goldy is probably the current “face”, with Arenado almost side by side.

But the times they are a changin’. Right now Winn is making a case to be the next “face”. Time will tell.

Sometimes I think of all-time “face of the franchise” guys. For the Cardinals it was always Musial, but for most fans today it is probably Pujols.

For our current opponent the Padres, Tony Gwynn.

Winn has had a marvelous rookie campaign. Much better hitting than most expected. Exceptional defense. Team leader in WAR.

    But….

He has a ways to go to become the “face” of the franchise. I think one of his problems is he has been so consistent. We kinda take him for granted.

I think you have to be consistent for several years before you can become the face of the franchise.

So, I will echo RBK’s comments.

The current face of the franchise is hands down the Cardinal manager.

    This team has no identity.

    We don’t hit home runs.
    We don’t steal bases.
    We don’t play scintillating defense.
    We don’t have dominant pitching.
We don’t have a HOF Manager.

No identity. Who would want to be the Face of this franchise?

Winn is the face that MLB and the Cardinals want to market.

Is he the face IMO. Not yet! I mean Contreras is likely the face moving forward but the face has to stay on the field more. Maybe Burly is the guy.

Anyone if it leads to more money.

The biggest thing Winn has going for him, he and Burleson, is that everyone else has underwhelmed. If Walker or Gorman or the bronze busts were lighting it up, nobody would be talking about Winn being the face of anything.

He may not be the face. But he’s the only guy I wouldnt trade from the ML roster.

Winn should be NL ROY in my opinion.

Burleson is still improving and glad he’s on the team.

Scott may be beginning to figure it out.

Donovan is our Swiss Army knife.

Nootbar should be the 4th outfielder

Contreras still has several good years left if he can stay healthy.

Pages is a serviceable back up catcher.

Pallante, Helsley, Gray, Fedde, King, Romero, and Liberatore have a place on the pitching staff moving forward.

The lack of MOTO production from Arenado and Goldschmidt paired with the regression of Walker and Gorman plus Contreras broken bones just gutted the lineup’s offensive production this year. A lineup that was supposed to be top 10 in order to paper over a starting rotation that was always looked at as being average at best. (Edman never played a game for us this year and Carlson getting hurt late in ST was a monkey wrench from the get-go.)

2025 looks pretty scary right now as there seems to be waaaay to many holes to fill all over the roster. The reality is that this team is 7-8 productive players & starting pitchers away from being good much less elite.

I don’t believe the Cardinals have a face of the franchise today. Goldschmidt may have been it 2 years ago, but now it’s blank. Winn could become that person. He’s our best player right now and it’s not particularly close by WAR. Helsley might be the most notable player for us though given he’s leading the NL in saves. We don’t have anyone else leading in anything good. And no ZTR, unfortunately Winn is not the rookie of the year. It’s a strong class. He might not even finish in the top 3.

At this point, isn’t Mozeliak the face of the franchise?

Bills face of franchise is already decided. It would have been nice to see a Cardinal play in the All-Star game.

    Brian,

That’s a good point. It is Mo – he has put himself front and center.

I agree as well. It probably is Mo. he’s been around longest and has often been at the head of the conversation.

Winn may get there. Give him a couple years of consistently good performance and a few big moments.

Honestly, you could make a decent argument that the face of the franchise is still Musial, Gibson, Smith, Pujols, and maybe even Molina. All representative of an organization living in the past and leaning ever harder on selling its fan base nostalgia.

I follow John Denton because he does put out some useful information but his homerism knows no bounds. He still refers to Goldy and Arenado as superstars whish is a joke.

It is my opinion that this teams does not have a face of the franchise, which is just one of our many problems.

Those two are no longer super nor stars.

Just overpriced mediocrity at this point in their careers. Getting paid for the players they used to be.

For me, it would be highly inconsistent to on one hand call the two veterans superstars while at the same time anointing a rookie the face of the franchise. Everyone gets a trophy!

It doesn’t make sense. But in fairness to Denton, if you’re the MLB-paid beat writer for this team, it’s probably getting pretty hard at this point to come up with positive material every week.

Helsley is the face of the franchise right now. His face should be known around the league and he the only Card on any “leader” list anywhere.

I heard Mozeliak mentioned. Which one of his two faces would be used? DeWitt could be used…. let people see what a tightwad looks like.
