Maybe they are constantly trading them to add that piece to win now?
They are in a position where they can paper over mistakes by just eating a contract and writing another check…
I think the main thing here is the Dodgers are now almost never in a position where they are forced to try any player out to see how they might do in MLB. They instead buy whomever they want based on their needs. Therefore, their minor leaguers don’t graduate as fast. For the Cardinals, the equivalent might be that Walker, Winn, Scott, and possibly Gorman would all still be prospects and accumulating value per the ESPN equation. Eventually, the Dodgers trade from their cache of talent. But lately, rarely do their minor leaguers ever seem to debut or get much of a chance.
Just wondering. Since LA’s farm system is so great, why do they have to buy so many top players?
I think they try to go all out in every aspect of roster building instead of just focusing on one or two different avenues. If you are good at everything it gives you more room for error in case of injuries, etc…
But lately, rarely do their minor leaguers ever seem to debut or get much of a chance.
That is true for their position players but their young pitchers get a chance because apparently the Dodgers only believe in signing veteran pitchers with an extensive injury history.
The Dodgers buy the best wonks too. Why wouldn’t they? The Cardinals probably try to develop their own.

I don’t know who Kiley McDaniel is, but he reminded me that Lindy had a Big League career that spanned 21 seasons…That’s a long time. Almost as long as Kitty and Rusty.
The Cardinals have had their share of highly ranked prospects over recent years, but nothing much has come of it. That is where the impact players need to come from, but the pitchers succumb to injury and the hitters fizzle when they reach the top. A trickle of lesser prospects have made it as role player/complimentary player types, but whether its because they are that good or because there is nobody else is debatable. Hopefully, the new PD regime and incoming FO will be able to do something about that. I think it is clear that the impact, MOTO, top of the rotation, will have to come up from the system in the future, at least under BDW. But until we see what actually happens, I suggest caution writing anybody into the future ML roster.
Speaking of Lindy McDaniel, my cousin met him at a sports collectibles show in Dallas some dozen or more years ago. He got me a baseball card signed by McDaniel. My cousin sent me a picture and McDaniel had on a Cardinal hat. My cousin said that although McDaniel pitched for 5 different teams, he always considered himself a Cardinal.
As for the prospects we got, the Baez kid must be a good one to be ranked #4 out of 97.
Just going to remind people that this is only out of 97 traded prospects. This isn’t where they rank on some top 100 overall list although Tait and De Vries are likely in that listing already.

98. BernalThe Griffin kid looks real good. If the Bucs get him going this year, and get Jones back in their rotation, our club could be the worst of the bunch n the NLC.
It could be four teams all with a chance in September, “and then there are the Cardinals 21 games back.” But let’s hope that is not the case.
I think the Cards are last place even if the Pirates don’t get much from Griffin or Jones. They’ve made a couple of nice little upgrades this off-season and their pitching is far better than ours to start with. Maybe the Pittsburgh blues hit them so they falter, but otherwise I think we are cellar dwellers.

193. Brandon ClarkeClarke makes his superlatives as “most likely to become an elite closer.” Neither Mathews nor Hence even got a mention for his other categories, which is odd. I’d give Hence decent odds to become at least a back end bullpen guy and Mathews as decent a shot as any to become a 200 inning starter.
Cards are the #9 system per Kiley, again third in the division.
