77. Herrera

🚨TOP 100 DAY🚨
Lots of little things discussed within the blurbs that will be fleshed out in articles over the next week:
– How prospects gain/lose value w/no minor leagues
– my breakout picks for next year’s top 10
– Industry-wide evaluation trendshttps://t.co/8EbuXAengd— Kiley McDaniel (@kileymcd) February 11, 2021
February 11, 2021 at 2:02 pm #154008The merge function is not working currently, so I went with the oldest one.
February 11, 2021 at 2:15 pm #154015Technically mine was at 10:25 and gscottar’s was at 10:26 (yes I looked after I saw we both posted, lol). Could we modify the name to reflect that it’s ESPN Prospect Rankings? Otherwise it could look like some other sort of rankings.
February 11, 2021 at 2:21 pm #154017stlcard25, you get no respect around here… 😉
February 11, 2021 at 3:44 pm #154020Ain’t that the truth! 😂
I like that gscottar’s post has the clickable tweet though, so that’s better anyway. Good to see Herrera getting some love. He could really move up lists with a good 2021 at Springfield/Memphis and more importantly, make it to St Louis later on in the season with a shot to take over next year.
February 12, 2021 at 6:01 am #154040In system wide rankings, the Cards come in 18th.
February 15, 2022 at 8:33 am #180018McDaniel updates for 2022:

February 18, 2022 at 9:39 am #180088McDaniel ranks the Cards system 14th.
14. St. Louis Cardinals ($217.5 million)
(40 players ranked, 13 better than 40 FV)
Last year: 18th, $171 million
Top-100 prospects: 4The Cardinals do it their way — they don’t fall into any of the neat boxes that other scouting and development groups do — with a solid group of potential impact talent from the draft, international signings and trades. The top two players in their system were prep third basemen expected to go higher in the first round who slid for unclear reasons, followed by a mid-to-low-tier international signing, an undervalued-at-the-time young lefty, and so on.
They continued this zig-when-they-zag tendency by taking Michael McGreevy in the first round this year, more beloved by eyeball evaluators than trendy analytical methods. They have to find value when they’re consistently picking in the back of the first round and the Cardinals have their own way of doing that.
February 18, 2022 at 12:06 pm #180093more beloved by eyeball evaluators than trendy analytical methods
Funny on two counts.
1) “trendy analytical methods”. Truer words were never spoken, but coming from McDaniel its funny.
2) The eyeball evaluators that know anything are sitting in rocking chairs or holding fishing poles.August 8, 2022 at 2:52 pm #194582After the trade deadline, the Cards come in…15th, somehow. A spot drop from preseason. The overall value did rise from $218M to $232M.
August 8, 2022 at 3:25 pm #194585I’ll be darned. Until I read the text in the link you provided, I thought maybe the Redbird Big League team could be purchased at a fair market value of approx. $225M…Seemed like a pretty good deal and I was ready to call a few of my buddies to see if we could scrape together the cash…I was gonna tell them we’d make a killing in the parking revenue alone!
August 8, 2022 at 3:29 pm #194586Nice! I like to think of myself in the #2 category, but I’m consistently wrong about almost everything. If you don’t believe me, you can ask my supervisor/wife…
August 8, 2022 at 4:26 pm #194590I saw that article earlier today stl25. No way the Cardinals system is 15th. It should easily be Top 10 considering all of the clamoring done during the trade deadline by the so called experts. I also noticed in McDaniel’s description of the Cardinal system he didn’t even mention Jordan Walker at all. How is that possible?
February 1, 2023 at 7:27 am #211935ESPN with the updated top 100…

February 3, 2023 at 7:49 am #212052McDaniel rates the systems as a whole…the Cards are 10th. An interesting quote regarding the Cards’ depth of young talent: “This is feeling Dodgers-adjacent — and that’s a huge compliment.”
February 3, 2023 at 9:04 am #212056Thanks for sharing, stlcard25. The good news is the Cards are 10th, but yet they are just third in the division. The two doormats, Cincy and Pitt, have been loading up on good prospects through draft and trades. If they come through, perhaps the division will equalize over time.
And the Cubs are just one spot behind StL and the Brewers five. So the entire Central Division is in the top half of these rankings.

Yep! 🙂

ParticipantThe Cubs…..ESPN loaded up the Cubs list with a bunch of 50 grade prospects in Hernandez, Caissie, Wesneski, and Triantos. (These are the just missed top 100 prospects) Even two in the top 100 are a joke too in Wicks and Alcantara.
Look up any of them, other than Wesneski, and tell me what they have over Burleson, Liberatore, or McGreevey? Or in Wicks case over Graceffo and Hence too?
I do like Crow-Armstrong and don’t like everyone dropping Brennen Davis.

Ok. I did a search for espn and couldn’t find it. You can merge the threads or delete the new one if need be.
February 2, 2024 at 11:44 am #242344I suspect ESPN may be too generic to search on, as it appears frequently.
Merge isn’t working correctly, so I am copying your info here. Last in the division is not encouraging.

30. AstrosFebruary 1, 2025 at 12:30 pm #275736Their take on the Cardinal system:
Top 100 prospects: 3
The Cardinals have some strong upper-minors pitching depth in right-handers Tink Hence, Michael McGreevy and Tekoah Roby and left-handers Quinn Mathews and Cooper Hjerpe — and I’d expect to see shortstops JJ Wetherholt and Thomas Saggese as well as catchers Leonardo Bernal and Jimmy Crooks in the upper minors in 2025. I’d bet there will be some All-Star appearances among that group, which is increasingly what the Cardinals need from their system. Their organizational payroll posture is effective at filling out a core with solid contributors, but they need to out-scout the competition to find stars since they haven’t been interested in paying retail price in free agency.
There are only two players in the organization with contracts guaranteed after 2026. St. Louis is in the middle of trying to trade one of them (Nolan Arenado), which bodes well for flexibility, but the core needs to be bolstered by standout young players, whether that is prospects or recent graduates.
February 2, 2025 at 6:41 am #275774The ESPN ranking should probably be taken with a few grains of salt. 3 of the 5 pitchers they tout will likely have limited or no impact in MLB due to arm trouble, and neither of the “shortstops” they tout are likely to man that position every day in MLB. But I guess the rankings as to other teams are probably not reality based either.
February 2, 2025 at 8:02 am #275779Just wondering. Since LA’s farm system is so great, why do they have to buy so many top players?
