Is it official? Im obviously no scout but I saw Doyle falling off the mound and running around celebrating vs a smooth delivery kid with tons of tools who could easily gain a few lbs and be a front line starter for a rebuilding team (aren’t we rebuilding?) and thought…why?
I don’t fault the Cardinals for not taking a lottery ticket high in the first round. Hernandez has looked great so far in a half season of A level ball. If the Pirates lottery ticket pays off, then yes, I will have regret and thought they should have gone for it all along.
Some people argue you never draft HS pitchers, period.

A lot of the write-ups last year were that Hernandez was the best pitcher in the draft, and best HS pitcher in a long time.
If you believe it was a mistake passing on Hernandez, do you believe the Cardinals should draft Rojas at #13 if he is still on the board in this year’s draft?
I think the Cardinals got overly ambitious with Doyle. He should have started the season at Peoria.
Agreed. 70% of the pitches he threw in college were fastballs. They should have known it was going to take extra time to develop his secondaries.
Of course, there were people proclaiming the Cardinals would rush him to the big leagues in a year…
It seemed a predetermined decision. During spring camp, Doyle did not dominate as I thought he might.
I picked Doyle before the draft and I’m sticking with him. It’s going to take time. Besides Hernandez has to do well at AA before I even think about him.

Agree 💯. They have him working on his secondary pitches. His fastball is elite, so they aren’t trying to wow everyone with it. As Bling states, his success or failure at the ml level relies on those secondary pitches being developed.
I think Doyle will turn out to be a fine pick. Whether that fine pick becomes a #2 starter or a relief arm, I think he’ll have some role at the big league level.
Hernandez looks great so far, a la Alex Reyes from our system 10 years ago. As we learned with Alex Reyes, nothing is a sure thing and it takes hard work, smart coaching and some blessing to make it happen at the highest level.
