We can talk about the questions in re the OF all day long, but the bottom line may be that DeJong is the most critical player for offensive success in 2020 behind Goldy.

I didn’t read the article but I would hope he focused this off-season on doing the things necessary to keep from striking out so much?

It was a 1-minute audio clip, not an article. Not detail-oriented, but he mentioned:

    – Soul searching, figuring out who he is as a player
    – Pursued strengths more so than working on weaknesses
    – Focused on quality of workout over quantity
    – Being a leader in the clubhouse

Oh great, that’s just great. Striking out all the time is his #1 weakness and he didn’t focus on fixing that problem?????

Sometimes I wonder if the game of baseball isn’t going down the terlet.

And that should scare you right there.

Guy hacks way too much to be relied on as a major offensive contributor. Until he figures that out and can hit .250 he’ll be a player you’ll love for stretches and will infuriate you at the the other 60% of his plate appearances.

And we did nothing to address the offense in the offseason. Brilliant!!!

He doesn’t strike more than Goldschmidt and Matt Carpenter do.

He had a very strong April. If you look at the last 5 months of the season, he hit .206. Down the stretch in the month of September,
    he hit .175 with a .264 OBP.
If he wants to be a leader, like he says in the audio, he needs to up hid offensive game.

In fact, here are the Cards who fanned at a higher rate than DeJong last season:

    O’Neill
    Bader
    Carpenter
    Wieters
    Fowler
    Goldschmidt

Again, overall season numbers may be a bit skewed. For instance, in April DeJong struck out only 22 times in 129 plate appearances. In August, it was 27 times in 105 plate appearances. In September, it was 33 times in 110 plate appearances.

Yeah, no kidding people. The WHOLE team strikes out too much. Surely they worked on that during the off-season instead of worrying about launch angles and stupid crap like that.

Well, they did have those sensors on their bats during batting practice that measured exit velocity and launch angle. Sure wish The Man and Hornsby had that opportunity
    and advantage.

They are tenth in the NL in strikeouts.

Rats, the game has changed. The Cardinals were below the NL average in strikeouts in 2019. As noted, nine of the 15 NL offenses had more Ks last season.

If this is true then we are doomed. Paul is a nice player but overrated in my opinion. He is a complimentary player so asking him to carry the team will result in disappointment.

If DeJong is only a complimentary player, whom do you have batting cleanup?

bccran, if you keep asking questions, people are going to start thinking last year’s offense was good. 😉

Just trying to figure out how critical it is for DeJong to improve his performance over May-September of last season. BA isn’t the end all, but here’s what it was in each of those months –

    May – .200
    Jun – .218
    Jul – .205
    Aug – .233
    Sep/Oct – .175

    Ouch.

Now now bccran, surely you know batting average doesn’t mean anything anymore. Whats important are the fWORs and the BAKITs and the WRc and the GPRs, etc, etc.

It reminds me how a guy on here a few years ago tried to tell me how valuable Tyler Greene was. I guess I kept forgetting that a .221 career average guy did hit a double in a game once.

    Rats –

Maybe OPS will look better than BA for our #3 or #4 hitter. Let’s see –

    May – .693
    Jun – .655
    Jul – .707
    Aug – .790
    Sep/Oct – .655

With his glove at SS, he is a great 7 or 8 hole bat. Unfortunately the Cards have Wong and Goldy and then nothing but 7/8 hole guys. Can they DH for Bader?

Still wondering who’s in the 3 and 4 slots besides Goldy. Anyone have ideas? DeJong? Carp? O’Neill?
    Molina? Fowler?
