I hope Dale Murphy, Curt Schilling & Fred McGriff get in.

GameCard…Schilling should definitely be a HOF’er. He had a very nice career and his post-season numbers are second to none. McGriff has much better overall career numbers than Murphy, but Murphy sports back to back NL MVP awards and was probably the best player in baseball for 4 or 5 years. It won’t bother me if all 3 get in there, but I’d still say McGriff and Murphy are questionable. I’ve also always wondered why Thurmon Munson isn’t in the HOF. I haven’t heard anything about him being considered lately. You?

Edit; I also almost forgot to mention that I’m pretty sure that Murphy is the only HOF eligible player who has won back to back MVP awards and is not a member of the HOF.

There was a period of 5 seasons 1982 thru 1987 where Dale Murphy was one of the best players in MLB and as you pointed out he had back-to-back MVP’s in 82 & 83. Curt Schilling’s not being in the HOF is a disgrace.

Well, Pete Rose isn’t a member and Big League baseball now reaps profits realized from gambling. It’s laughable. I don’t know how the voters and MLB can claim to possess something that could be called credible judgement.

Personally I could make an argument for all of them except mattingly and Murphy. If mattinglys health hadn’t deteriorated, I probably could him but that being said, puckett got in and his career was shorter and I thing mattingly was better. Murphy just totally fell off the table so hard for me to make a case in my opinion regardless of how good he was in those few years

1982willie…Both Puckett (.318) and Mattingly (.307) are over .300 career hitters with 2304 and 2153 hits in 12 and 14 seasons with 6 and 9 GG awards respectively. Puckett played CF on two WS winning teams, but Mattingly sports the 1 AL MVP award. They were both good, but I’d have to give the edge to the CF’er. Insofar as a career being cut short, why isn’t Thurmon Munson in the HOF?

Haha! I see Albert Belle is one of the guys on this year’s ballot. He should be voted into the Hall of Intimidation. Belle would frighten Luca Brasi…

Haha! Between Bonds and Clemens the voters are looking at 8 MVP awards and 7 CYA’s and one of them is the all time HR leader. Neither one of them will be voted into the HOF this year and probably not in my lifetime. I’m not sure what to think of that.

gscottar…I don’t know why it would, but I do know that Bonds was the best left-handed hitter I’ve ever seen play.

Every time Schilling’s name comes up the discussion always goes a certain way. Maybe this will be the exception.

gscottar…I’ll be darned. I’d rather carry on a conversation with Mrs. 1TD about her girlfriend’s new hair color that to talk about anything related to politics…Haha!

Roger Maris also won back to back MVPs and is not in the Hall.

I will need to look at some numbers before commenting on the current candidates. Bonds and Clemens are a couple of ‘roid poster boys, so they always elicit a lot of banter. Both would be no doubters had they stayed clean, even if their numbers were not as strong. It is that great unknown, plus the moral issue that keeps them outside looking in.

BikeMike…Man alive! How could I have forgotten Maris? I think I even used that one as a game thread trivia question…Haha! I need to drink more coffee.

I wonder how many players who amped up on PED’s and never got caught are already in the HOF? I can’t think of anyone who was ever voted into the HOF being stripped of rank and cashiered for any infraction that was discovered after they were voted in.

I was thinking the same thing 1TD, as far as that back to back MVP and not in the Hall factoid.

It used to be back in the day that guys did stuff that diminished their quality of play, rather than enhance it. I read a lot of Bob Broeg’s TSN columns and books about old time players – guys from the 1900s to 1940s or so. It seemed most of them liked to have a good time, drink alcohol, and carouse. But back then you never got super rich playing ball.

An old time guy, Bill Werber, wrote a couple of books about his life and career. He retired in the ‘40s and went in to insurance sales, and said he made a lot more in his first year of selling insurance than he ever did in a season of playing ball.

I used to read those old Sporting News issues from cover to cover at the drug store magazine rack by our house when I was a young kid. I’m sure it annoyed the Rexall guy, but he tolerated it. Every now and then I’d have enough money to actually buy one and take it home. It usually fell victim to the scissors as I’d cut out the good photos of my favorite baseball and football players and tack them up on the wall in my room.

I also wonder if a guy like Tatis Jr. ends his career with around 3000 hits, 500 HR’s and plays on a couple of WS winners ever gets into the HOF, or is he pretty much done right out of the gate?

Well 1toughdominican I agree both Puckett and mattingly were great hitters but I think the twins ballpark helped him more than new york did mattingly but that’s just my opinion. Also injuries directly affected mattinglys numbers, don’t think pucketts issues directly affected his stats though I could be wrong. I’m not saying puckett shouldn’t be in hall just odd how he made it so easy where mattingly didn’t come close.

Back to back mvps shouldn’t be an automatic in. Being great for five years but lousy for the rest is not a hall of Fame career.People always talk about Albert sliding after leaving the Cardinals but he actually had some decent years and didn’t just disappear like Murphy did.

1982willie…Without question Mattingly was the best hitter on Earth for 4 or 5 years. He produced DiMaggio numbers from the ages 23 to 28. There weren’t near as many televised games back then, but I remember reading and hearing about him when he really took off and thinking, “who is this guy?” He was no joke. It’s just a shame he had nagging problems with his back. I experienced relatively minor stuff and I can’t imagine trying to rip at a baseball with a bad back. At any rate, I’ve got zero issues if he’s voted into Cooperstown, but I’d have to say his chances are slim. I hope I’m wrong.
