gscott, maybe that’s possible — Mo looking for a change of scenery in the near future. So many who turn to broadcast media talk about how they never make a mistake in the booth or studio.
Mo heard quite a few calling for his head the last season. I heard him refer to that in an interview and you know it can weigh on a guy. Wasn’t it Jeff Albert, after the 2022 season, who said he wanted new scenery because of some mean tweets directed toward him? It’s always out there for these public figures, but at some point it crosses a guy’s tolerance level. Who knows what that level is for Mo?
Maybe Bloom is an ownership hire. BDW would be jusrified in wanting to hear from somebody not conditioned to stay inside the lines by years of philosophical indoctrination.
I think the common thread among the talking heads is that they were fired and probably couldn’t get another top job. I know that is case for Phillips and probably Bowden, too. Theo has an uncanny knack of knowing when to quit before the train derails. My guess is that he wants to be part of an ownership group next.

I hope Bloom can drive change. Mo said the right things today about it, but unless Bloom and the DeWitts have an agreement beyond this assignment, Bloom will only be around until his next shot to run a team comes.
Blake suggests, or at least wonders, about Bloom’s input in the moves made this winter. If Mo (or BDW) thinks that level of actionable input is needed, then what would be a plan for getting it if Bloom gets an offer and leaves? If there is that level of deficiency, a temporary prop-up is hardly a fix. It is very concerning.
If you check out Mo’s remarks yesterday, he said that he ran acquisition ideas by Bloom. Bloom knew some of the guys from TB but others he was not as familiar with recently. Seemed very business as usual sounding.

That might be even more concerning. If Bloom was integral to the process, its concerning, since he’s a temp, and if he wasn’t, its concerning because it means nothing has changed.
It is probably not a coincidence that Nick Robertson, Ryan Fernandez, Victor Santos, Andrew Kittredge, and Riley O’Brien are all for former Rays or Red Sox players.
Really interesting article from The Athletic about the mess in Boston. Bloom is not the primary focus but is mentioned several times, in a fairly positive manner, especially in rebuilding the farm system.

It was generally thought that Bloom did what he was brought in to do in fixing the farm. Perhaps the Cards feel like Chaim can do the same in St Louis. It feels like the farm has more highly rated prospects than before, but they aren’t exactly translating to minor league success team wise and it’s not providing the real goal, big league regulars who can provide wins for cheap.
The thing about Bloom that I want to know is who was supposed to be doing whatever it is he was brought in to do?
Brian, I do know Bloom is an adviser. My point is that he was not here before.
Did Mo not need advice before? Was he getting advice from someone else? Bloom is here to hopefully address and correct some deficiency. But it seems nothing and no one were deficient,

The Cardinals have had advisers before, as do many organizations. I am pretty sure I already mentioned Bob Gebhard, former GM of the Rockies, who served in a similar special assistant role for the Cardinals advising Mo from 2016-2020.
What is getting more attention this time is Mo’s plan to step down and speculation that Bloom could be his replacement.
If Bloom can turn around the Cardinals’ development system, I’m in favor of it. I don’t want him making trades but if he was able to improve the Red Sox minors, he could be a good thing.
I wasn’t able to read the Athletic article, but I understand Bloom is here in a very different capacity than when he was in Boston. Or in TB. Here, nobody has to take his advice. And I think that to whatever extent it may conflict with ‘the philosophy’ it will get awkward.
Yes, of course Bloom is in a different position by definition. He is not in charge. He is a consultant.
Bloom could make suggestions to Mo and Dewitt on who to hire, or how to change the use of metrics to get better results, or changes to minor league instruction that helped in Boston. I think he can make a difference.
It will be basically impossible for us to know what influence Bloom has on the organization. We won’t be getting a printout of their meeting minutes or anything. If he was good at building up the Boston farm system that it is a hopeful sign and if he still has the magic Rays touch of player development and shrewd trades that is hopeful. Perhaps Mo will take his advice. I’m sure they aren’t paying him to just sit around and do nothing.
