You would think with a new start that Carlson can be better than Lane Thomas. We will see how he does, but I think he will do pretty well in Tampa and then end up on the other side of a deadline deal maybe two years down the road, where he is the addition a team wants and Tampa gets prospects. They like to do a lot of prospect churn, and this looks like it could end up that way.
If Carlson produces this will be one deal where I won’t blame the organization for messing up. With Arozarena and Garcia they never really got a shot. Carlson did get a lot of chances and could not capitalize.
However, I do like what others have said about just keeping Gallegos and sending Carlson to Memphis. That might have been a smarter way to go.
I think they decided not to send him to Memphis because they did not intend on tendering him a contract for next year.
Yeah, you are probably right gscottar. Had he gone to Memphis and tore it up over the remaining games then maybe they would have brought him back to compete in the Spring. But really management did him a favor by letting him start over somewhere else.
I was ok with the DFA of Gallegos. The garbage innings he worked were a bit of a mirage. He’s not fixed. And everyone knows it, which is why we were offered nothing. And we needed the roster space. I’m still fully disappointed in the Carlson move, but it’s good for Dylan. It won’t shock me one bit if he’s a 4 WAR player for Tampa next year and better than any of our outfielders.
I hated losing Arozarena too. At the time I really had wished it would have been a different outfielder. I understood the trade. We were desperate for young pitching – especially young left handed pitching at the time. I just didn’t love losing Randy. I didn’t care about losing Adolis Garcia. I’m still a little shocked at his transformation. But at the time, I felt just about the same way I felt when we DFA’d Moises’s Gomez this past offseason. Whatever. Obviously I was wrong on Garcia.
Yeah, with the Cardinals track record you just get the sense that Dylan will put it together for another organization. He’s got the tools and athleticism. Kind of odd how he is left handed but does not hit as well lefty. Will be interesting to watch him and Palacios at Tampa. Richie is doing well there.
That area could be a real hotbed for baseball. Get an open air park, or possibly retractable roof stadium at a location close to the water and build a good team and you would think they would be an attractive location for players. Fans could make a day of it around the water then take in the game.
I also could never understand why Big League baseball clubs haven’t been able to thrive in Florida. I’ve heard the theorem that suggests there’s too many other entertainment options that divert fans away from a baseball game, but that doesn’t wash when I think of the numerous teams that seem to do perfectly well in California. I also think of all the talented baseball players that the state of Florida produces and it just doesn’t make sense to me why the two Big League teams in that state seem to struggle to develop a consistently strong fan base.

Palacios has a .680 OPS, which while modest, Carlson would probably die for. For reference, .680 is right in Gorman and Goldy territory.
Richie’s offense is not all that great but he is on pace for a 4 WAR season over the course of 500 ABs. He has improved defensively which has helped his overall value.
Palacios’s O game is about OBP not power. .348 OBP is enough to hold a spot in a lineup. Gives the power guys a chance to hit something besides solos.

It is my understanding that the Rays new stadium will be another dome without a retractable roof but is supposed to have more glass to allow for natural lighting.
I miss RC/G bling. No-one speaks of it anymore.
My daughter gifted me the April 13th, 1968 The Sporting News, the Opening Day Issue. Brock is on the cover as the “Redbird Blur”. She found it at a antique shop.
I have that issue as well JJ. Picked it up a few years ago at a local sports collectibles shop. Another great cover is the April 29, 1967 issue with a smiling Roger Maris.
