Yes, it is fairly easy to quantify.
You can look at the sales tax revenue on days of home games versus away games/non-games and measure the impact.
Then, if you split between the city and the ballclub 50/50, it would not come close to $500 million.
April 22, 2024 at 7:40 am #249047Bill please don’t tell us this is the best team you can put on the field. As far as renovations for the Stadium, it’s getting too dangerous to go down there. The City is a sinking ship.
April 22, 2024 at 5:56 pm #249111I’m thinking that they want to change up
Busch Stadium 3 because architectural preferences have changed. In 1966 Busch Stadium 2 was state of the art in stadium design, and in 2006 when Busch Stadium 3 opened, ‘retro’ was the big thing. I’m not sure how to describe the current architectural trend in stadium design, but I know it’s not retro. For half a billion dollars, I’d expect I would expect a totally new looking stadium. Setting aside ways to pay for it for now, I’m in favor of this idea.April 23, 2024 at 12:42 am #249191The Cards management needs to cite specifically what upgrades they want done. The Dewitt’s need pony up a sonificant chunk, perhaps 50% or more.
The city needs to revitalize Lacledes Landing. That was a big part of going to Cardinals game back in the day.
April 23, 2024 at 10:45 am #249221My guess is that most of the changes they plan to do at Busch probably won’t be noticeable to the average fan. Stuff like adding more luxury suites, making the existing suites swankier, upgrades to the club house and underground batting cages, upgrades to electrical, HVAC, plumbing, etc….
May 3, 2024 at 1:30 pm #2504921982 willieParticipantUnless the stadium has totally deteriorated in the 18 months since I was in it, no the public shouldn’t be funding it. Any so called upgrades would be niche and since management didn’t really open up the bank account this past off-season, they have plenty of money if they want to improve it.
May 3, 2024 at 1:43 pm #250493I think gscottar has it correct in that upgrades are probably more about things not noticeable to fans – electrical, HVAC, maybe structural enhancements etc.
The general design and how the stadium looks is evergreen. You are not going to take a stadium that was built to look retro, and make it look different just because that is the new thing.
May 3, 2024 at 2:33 pm #250496Whenever my home or vehicle need routine maintenance and upkeep to preserve the overall function and appearance, I’ll ask Wille Jr. to chip in a buck or two.
May 3, 2024 at 5:05 pm #250514If you’ve noticed, there are a lot of billionaires asking for handouts right now to fund their private businesses that make them tens, if not hundreds of millions, of dollars per year.
We just need to end the welfare for billionaires.
May 3, 2024 at 5:11 pm #250517They feel entitled to a handout as a result of all of the time they spend on the formal attire charity dinner circuit…
May 3, 2024 at 10:09 pm #250609Would $500M of public money be a gift to the Cardinals, or would the Cardinals be expected to pay it all back with interest?
May 3, 2024 at 10:17 pm #250611Maybe the Cardinals should ask some of their rich players to give them $500MM.
May 3, 2024 at 10:24 pm #250613Good idea. I know one thing for sure…. I’m against spending any money on the stadium unless 1td agrees to come out of retirement for it.
May 3, 2024 at 11:07 pm #250615I guess they didn’t see the Kansas City vote…..and the Chiefs have a fairly decent team, now I assume if the Chiefs split with the Royals there chances will be better.
May 4, 2024 at 3:47 am #250618Stadium in need of an upgrade? Sure. Do what I have to do. Go to the bank and get a loan. I assume DeWitt has excellent credit.
May 4, 2024 at 12:29 pm #250653I doubt if the Cardinals will leave the STL metro area but if they don’t get the corporate welfare they are seeking from the city taxpayers I could see them pulling up stakes and moving to the suburbs. There will be some kind of threat or leverage play. It worked for the Brewers and Orioles but has not worked out for the Royals yet.
May 4, 2024 at 12:48 pm #250656Sad to say, but I think it would be lunacy for them to remain downtown once the current venue is no longer viable. Downtown’s been steadily on the decline for some time now and in my view the rate at which it’s been deteriorating will only gain momentum in the next 5 to 10 years. Desolation row down there.
