If no trade is possible before the deadline, you let him ride off into the sunset after season’s end, Bling. But I bet he wouldn’t be riding very far until the cubs came a calling for his services.
The easy Burleson comp is Matt Adams. Good average and contact ability with a low OBP due to low walk rates. Below average with the glove, so he’s a 1B/DH type. Not a lineup anchor on a good team, but will benefit a poor lineup. Seems like a 45+ guy.
Bling: Immediately sign him for another year at half his current salary. $11 million should keep him and his family comfortably in Post Toasties for 12 months.
Adams was a dead pull hitter, I believe, which is why the increasing use of the shift killed him. Similar to Marp. Burleson sprays to all fields and he is emerging as clearly superior to Adams.
It is still too early to tell how Burleson’s career will develop. He was very average last year but has really blossomed this year. Will he be able to sustain it or will opposing teams figure him out? At this point I would compare him to the late Chris Duncan but Burly has the potential to be better.
