At possibly 7 and 8. With Winn at 9. Either Burleson or Saggese would need to be in LF and the other DH for it to work, right now. also, Scott leading off and playing CF isn’t that far-fetched, even starting the season. These are the kind of bold changes that could elevate the team’s performance from last season..
March 11, 2024 at 10:55 am #243706Shady, I love the topics and ideas you are coming up with but would it be possible to consolidate them into existing threads instead of a new thread for each new idea? I am not a moderator so it isn’t my place to police these things and I don’t intend to offend but it is kind of difficult to follow so many active threads.
March 11, 2024 at 10:57 am #243707Thanks, but I don’t quite follow. The lineup, itself, is a whole different topic for conversation. In this case, trying to lengthen the lineup. However, I will try to consider your suggestion.

March 11, 2024 at 12:01 pm #243713Shady – some good thoughts. First, generally we try to keep threads consolidated as much as possible. It saves bandwidth, and also keeps things from be too unwieldy.
As for the general topic, I tend to agree that the Cardinals need to get younger and more athletic. Burly is not exactly the type of athletic guy I generally favor, but shows a history of being a good line drive hitter and certainly can be an asset. I don’t mind the lack of power right bow – I think that will come as he matures.
I would prefer Scott to get a season at AAA, but it could be he will get fast tracked if Edman and Carlson either cannot play or do not provide much production. An alternative could be to play Noot in center a lot this year as well.
March 11, 2024 at 12:35 pm #243714How many countless Saggese/ Burleson/ Scott threads is this Shadydude going to spam this decent forum with? (Hint: it will be a lot) He got booted from Cards Talk last week for bad behavior.
Another hint, “Wally Butterworth” is his racist sock puppets. Google the name.
He uses to be cute, converse with himself, really odd and problematic behavior.
Hopefully he reels it in but I doubt it.
March 11, 2024 at 12:55 pm #243715Keep the discussion on Cardinals baseball and not on other posters. Let the mods moderate, please. Thank you.
P.S. The forum rules are pinned to the top of this board. New members, please read them now to avoid trouble later.
March 11, 2024 at 1:12 pm #243718Brian, just so you’re aware, Shady has been spamming other Cardinals chats – such as STL Today – for a couple of years. He will often post repeatedly about Burleson and other minor league players once they are on the cusp of potentially making the major league roster. Not only multiple threads, but the same comments over and over. He won’t ever change, and he often creates multiple accounts, such as the Wally Butterworth one, where he will talk to himself. I’ll leave the moderating to you, but just be aware this will be ongoing if you let him remain. He was finally banned from STL Today recently. Good luck!

Wow, Brian, BicycleMike or UCONN couldn’t have said it better than Shady here. You know, I’ve thought for a few years now that Scotty would be the perfect on deck candidate to tackle moderator duties when an opening came to fruition. No offense to the esteemed Scotty, but Shady, in only his first few days here at The Cardinal Nation, has demonstrated all the necessary characteristics for moderator duties. Shady clearly exhibits a love for our Cardinals, along with a tremendous gift for gab. Plus, he pulls no punches when it comes time to reel in posters whom have obviously veered off track in our discussions of Cardinal baseball. I have no idea what site Shady came from, but one can be assured that he’s dearly missed by all. I hereby roll out the bright red welcome mat in Shady’s direction and call upon the powers that be (Brian, UCONN & BicycleMike) to strongly consider Shady for some kind of managerial duties here at The Cardinal Nation before we lose him to another Cardinals board. Thank you and back to Redbirds baseball.
March 11, 2024 at 3:38 pm #243745We don’t need a poor fielder at both corner outfield slots. We don’t need a second baseman playing out of position. Especially one who hasn’t done jack above the Texas League. This whole idea reeks of some kind of desperate attempt to get a little more out of a fantasy league team. Burly will play until Noot or Edman return. Saggese will go to Memphis and show he can or can’t excell vs AAA opposition.
If the org wanted to go with an everyday DH, I wouldn’t mind seeing them stick Burly there and evaluate after the first half. But we already know they do not want to go that way. As it is,he will not get enough PAs to get in a groove or stay sharp. It’s too bad.
March 11, 2024 at 3:57 pm #243751Bling, I get what you are saying, but I am confused about one part. You note that Burly will be a regular until the injured OFs return. I agree that is most likely. But then you say he won’t play enough to get into a groove and stay sharp. That seems to be in conflict with the first statement.
Perhaps you are counting on Nootbaar and Edman to be back more quickly than I am… but IMO, a month or six weeks of everyday ABs should be enough for Burly to show himself. If he hits well, he earns more time. If he struggles, then he should play less (or go back to Memphis).
It is going to be a great opportunity for him, after it looked like he might not even make the team. Then again, he also had a pretty good chance last year due to injuries to others (347 plate appearances was quite a bit) but didn’t shine as hoped.
March 11, 2024 at 5:20 pm #243765I really like the suggestion of Burleson getting a 6 weeks audition at DH. Especially, vs RHP. By the way, in looking ahead to Saggese, will he hit for enough power to be a 3 to 6 type hitter in the lineup? Actually, Scott leading off and Saggese batting #2 might be a very productive combo, eventually. Saggese would get a bunch of fastballs batting right behind Scott.
March 11, 2024 at 5:33 pm #243771looks like Burleson is going to get his shot hopefully he gets hot and never looks back
March 11, 2024 at 5:36 pm #243772Brian, I meant after his stint as a regular ends with the return of regulars. Then he will not get enough use to stay sharp.
March 11, 2024 at 5:36 pm #243773Burly will get a lot of singles and a fair amount of doubles. I really feel he needs to figure out a way to hit more HRs. He needs to “cut it loose” more when the count is in his favor.
March 11, 2024 at 5:38 pm #243775I agree Shady he needs to hit for more power or they will keep trying to play nootbaar

Thanks for clarifying, but I do not believe that is assured. Especially considering Carlson’s continuing struggles against RHP, I could see Burleson earning co-fourth OF status with the good side in his favor as well as sharing the DH job – but ONLY IF he takes advantage of his April opportunity and hits well.
First things first. He has to earn more time but I believe it is possible.
March 11, 2024 at 6:35 pm #243780Burleson has a chance. Old school player. Natural lh swing. I could see him as a high average guy.oh yea-average doesn’t matter anymore. But I still give him a chance to stick.
March 12, 2024 at 3:05 am #243786We need Eddie back.

I still like the old fashioned “high batting average” guys. A high batting average does two things, it adds to your on-base percentage and it moves runners along the bases.
The classic great season I look at where a guy hit for average, but not home runs yet was very valuable was Dick Groat’s 1963 season. Good average, lots of doubles, but only 6 home runs. Give me guys that can do that and I have no complaints.
March 12, 2024 at 11:26 am #243810I like newfangled OBP guys even better…
March 12, 2024 at 11:27 am #243811bikemike, how about Tommy Herr in 1985?
302avg, 8hr, 110rbi. He actually hit third in the lineup that year after Coleman and McGee and in front of Clark. You would never see a guy like that hitting third now.
March 12, 2024 at 6:16 pm #243861Yeah, good one gscottar. Those ‘80s Cardinals team would never “fly” today. No one would even attempt to build a speed and defense team anymore. Times have changed. Ballparks are mostly built for home runs. Stats say home runs are far more valuable than what speed can do. It used to be that “speed never slumps”. You don’t hear that anymore.
March 12, 2024 at 6:35 pm #243862And Herr collected 83 RBI’s in ’87. He tatered up twice that season.
