Former Astros and Mariners scout Bernie Pleskoff ranks the Cardinals system 16th with a “C” grade.

This is another case of too many teams to analyze. I think his comments are off base. Just read the Cardinal ranking comments…. you’ll see what I mean.
Bernie is based out of Phoenix, so I know he sees the teams that train there more. He also gets extensive looks at the AFL players from all 30 systems, but they are just a subset of the overall talent.
I’d have to disagree with this article about pitching. As has been mentioned, the pitching cupboard is much more bare below our projected AA rotation. But AA, AAA, and STL it appears to be our strong suit. If Reyes is healthy, the Cardinals starting will have much competition and depth. Helsley, Hudson, Gomber and Gant would start for most of the other 29 teams.
And I believe between last years draft, this years draft, and the young DSL arms they can fill void the minor league pitching void in time, as there appears to be more pitchers than starting spots from AA though the majors.
It is a farm system ranking, so guys like Gomber and Gant who are no longer prospects would not be a factor one way or the other. The young pitchers in and around St. Louis should buy them time to restock, but more pitching is needed in the system, IMO. My guess is the hitting would rank the system better, but the overall pitching assessment brings it down. At least that is how BaseballHQ broke out their Cardinals rankings when placing them 16th as a system, as well.
These rankings are all over the place. This guy has the White Sox 2nd but I saw a list the other day that had them in the mid teens. How can there be that much discrepancy?
This is why we hear comments all the time about the Cardinals “using voo doo and pixie dust magic” or “where did this guy come from”? Our prospects are consistently underrated or maybe our minor league staff is just that good at player development.
