I am creating this to throw out interesting name for the a rule 5/draft. I know the Cards don’t have open 40 man roster spots. But a trade or non tender could change that. The Guardians have 2 lefties that would interest me. Ryan Webb and Steven Pérez. Maybe they be traded for also.

C27, great finds, and potentially needs and steals.
A question for those of you smarter than me, would they be able to drop Raquet, Koperniak, Roycroft, etc and then make a trade for those two and add them to the 40 man? I don’t recall a situation like this, but if that’s possible. I’d rather give up some guys with likely not much of a chance in MLB. And at least they would get more than the hundred K or whatever it is these days to select a player.

    Cards get: Webb and Perez
Nats get: Ugueto, Jack Findlay and Grayson Tarlow

They will likely lose those great C27 finds anyways….

Yes, they can always waive guys like Raquet, Roycroft, or Koperniak. Some other team could potentially claim them at that point, but none of these 3 is likely to be viewed as a critical loss.

The Cardinals wouldn’t be the only org noticing those two. Cleveland would be able to take the best offer. We need to remember that trading is zero sum. We can shift talent forward in time or back, move excess to address scarcity. But trading cannot create more talent than you had.

I’d give up more, but if they think they are going to lose them for $200k, the Cards can definitely up the deal. It was just a quick thought made up package back.

Maybe you select one in Rule 5 draft, and trade for the other at the same time.

Does anyone know where the Cardinals stand in the Rule 5 picking order?

We had the 11th worst record but the teams ahead of us need to have an open spot on their 40 man roster.

And clubs will pass on their picks too. 14 picks in the 1st round last winter. TBD

Those ahead of us but not sure of their present 40 man roster size.

    1.Rockies
    2. White Sox
    3. Nationals
    4. Twins
    5. Pirates
    6. Angels
    7. Orioles
    8. Athletics
    9. Braves
    10. Rays
    11. Cardinals

A lot of bad teams there!

The Rockies, Twins, Pirates, Athletics have full rosters. So that gives us the 7th pick.

I just found another gem, but it would be like Roby in that he had Tommy John surgery in August. Yordanny Minegro. He had fabulous numbers at AA. I think he would eorth stashing for 2026 & 2027. As he recovers, put him in the back of the bullpen. 2 things make me think this a good idea.
    1) The organization is not afraid of drafting pitchers with recent TJ surgeries.
    2) We’re not contending anytime soon.

The protection deadline has passed, but that does not set the 40-man. The Cards may have the seventh pick if the draft was held today, but 40-man rosters are not frozen. The roster count used for Rule 5 is as of the morning of December 10, draft day. Trades, releases, etc. between now and then can change the Rule 5 team eligibility picture, up or down.

    2025 Rule 5 Draft Targets

A couple of pitchers interest me. Both articles jive on a couple of the same pitchers. Petit from the Tigers looks interesting. Also a lefty might be needed if Romero is dealt. Natura Jr. and McDaniels would interest me on that side.

Never seen this site before but an interesting article.

I didn’t realize that Griff McGarry was available via the R5 draft. I would expect him to selected by some team with his really good stuff. The command isn’t great, but the risk of a R5 pick is very low and McGarry is absolutely the type of guy you can stuff in your pen and let him develop there.

At a high level, I definitely expect the Cards to take a LHP they think can be a good RP. There is only Jojo on the MLB roster and the upper minors LHP RP depth is non-existent so they need some outside help and the R5 draft is the cheapest way to get it and some guys have good RP upside

BA also put out a new list of R5 targets.

Reading this, I wonder if the Cards target Hayden Mullins from the Red Sox. A LHP with good results albeit a bad walk rate who Bloom drafted a few years back

Also don’t forget Packy Naughton is still with the team. He signed a 2 year minors deal. He didn’t pitch at all last year. He could be a lefty and I guess he’s been throwing but not off speed.

Rule 5 would be a cheap way to get a lefty. People seem high on a couple of guys i. Both articles. Petit man sounds interesting.

MLB Pipeline singles out Pete Hansen as a Cardinals’ draft eligible player.

I think DFAing Roycroft to open up another roster would be helpful for next weeks draft. Unless trades lighten the roster.

My final thoughts are between Perez from the Guardians, or Mullins and Monegro from the Red Sox. Perez is a lefty reliever. Mulllins could be a long man, and has a history of starting. Monegro is my top pick, but would have to be stashed on the IR for most of 26 and part of 27.

As Brian noted the 40 man rosters have changed. Only the Orioles and Giants have full rosters. So we would pick 9th if all teams ahead of us select a player.

Petit or the guy from the Dodgers is who I’d take.
