These guys have been making a living throwing it past everybody since they could hold a baseball. Eventually it doesn’t work anymore and then the question is what else you got? It seems like its usually not much, so reach back for a little more. Maybe thats what happened with Mathews, trying to get it past higher level hitters and ending up on the shelf. Now he’s in AAA working out plan B, whatever that is. Pallante had to come up with a pitch to stick in MLB. It doesn’t seem like a great PD model. It hasn’t worked at least.

BW – for balance sake, you could do Starter of the Month, Reliever of the Month, Infielder of the Month, and Outfielder of the Month. Then you’re not highlighting pitchers more than hitters. It could be problematic for guys that play both infield and outfield just like it’s problematic for pitchers at the lower levels where they often piggyback and the starter doesn’t really matter.

I think I’d just keep it the same though. Who cares if it doesn’t always match up with the team? The team has different priorities.

On the position player side should it be hitter of the month. I’m pretty sure D does not factor in, so hitter would be more accurate than player.

What about baserunning? That is not hitting, but it is included in the analysis. To me, this is more nomenclature than substance…

I think July will be the rare month for which the Cardinals will agree with my picks.

I don’t see how that could disagree this time around! The choices are pretty clear.

Yeah agreed both choices this month are pretty easy. It is nice just seeing the monthly breakdowns on some of the guys stat wise as well. I need Rainiel had been playing well, but exciting to see he was in the top 5 OPS in the system. Ixan with another really good month. Given the dearth of starting pitching options in Memphis and Ixan’s performance across now 97 innings, I would think they would give him a taste of AAA.

On Braden Davis, he definitely needs to keep working on his command. A ball was an easy assignment for a 22 year old that pitched at Oklahoma his last year. I’m glad to see him pitching well in A+ as well. He likely needs to stay there the remainder of the year to work on his command, but I hope to see him jumped to AA in 2027.

Here are Davis’s minors statcast numbers I pulled together from his time in Palm Beach. His changeup was making the A ballers look silly.

    +------------------+---------+----------+--------+--------+
    | Pitch Type | Usage % | Velocity | SwStr% | Whiff% |
    +------------------+---------+----------+--------+--------+
    | Changeup | 26.5% | 81.7 | 30.74% | 61.5% |
    | Sinker | 39.3% | 92.5 | 9.11% | 24.5% |
    | Cutter | 8.4% | 84.8 | 14.89% | 33.3% |
    | Slider | 22.2% | 81.7 | 14.52% | 37.1% |
    | 4-Seam Fastball | 3.6% | 91.9 | 12.50% | 27.8% |

BDavis is certainly a pitcher to keep an eye on. Oddly enough the MLB top-30 prospect list doesn’t include him. What? If there are 30 prospects better than BDavis the organization is in much better shape than most fans think it is.

Lots of great candidates this month. Almost a tie between Rodriguez and Wetherholt. But several others in the mix with great months. I haven’t run the numbers, but I think it’s the best month offensively for the system.

I think it’s safe to say we all underestimated Deniel Ortiz. The fact that he’s only in his 20 y/o season is definitely icing on the cake.

OPS may not accurately catch everything, but for Memphis it was their 4th best month (.771 vs season average of .773), Springfield 4th best month (.680 vs season average of .715), Peoria best month (.736 vs season average of .703) and Palm Beach 3rd best month (.674 vs season average of .692). Memphis had their best month in May, Springfield in June, Peoria August and Palm Beach in April. If I had to pick which would average out to the best, it would probably be April or July, but I’d be curious to see the monthly stats.

Thanks 25! Maybe it was just Peoria coming out of their shell that made me feel that way!

Brian, I believe in the past you have said the Cards only consider pitchers with 15 innings, so that only leaves 3 choices you listed. Ynfante, Mathews, Mautz. I’m guessing the org chooses Mathews. I would maybe choose Mautz personally. Ynfante had a better ERA and peripherals, but Mautz had the lowest WHIP while Ynfante allowed a lot of hits. Ynfante did a good job managing the contact though in terms of runs allowed though. I would give the edge to a guy doing it a couple of levels higher.

    Approximate K%, BB%
    Ynfante – 27.3 K%, 8.1 BB%
    Mathews – 30.8 K%, 12.0 BB%
    Mautz – 26.4 K%, 8.8 BB%

Overall, it was a good month for all 3 and nice to see Mathews with a better month. I would also try maybe splitting out to a SP and RP each month next year. For RP, I agree with your selection of Michael Watson.

And the Cardinals went with Baez and Gastelum.
