By a considerable margin, The Cardinal Nation’s choice as the top hitter in the #stlcards system during April is @GoPBCardinals first baseman-catcher Josh Kross, who bested eight other finalists. https://t.co/wdc64Ndzi4 pic.twitter.com/tjkGn3ICBv

May 2, 2025 at 9:56 am #280870Opening his professional career with a bang, Palm Beach right-handed starter Brandt Thompson put together the top overall pitching performance in the #stlcards system in April, in our view. St. Louis Cardinals: C Josh Kross
The Cardinals nabbed Kross in the sixth round last summer by way of Cincinnati, where he had homered 19 times and posted a 1.076 OPS despite a concerning strikeout-to-walk ratio. It’s too early to know if he’ll go down as a steal, but he’s hitting .288/.377/.671 with six home runs (and eight other extra-base hits) in his first 19 games in the FSL. More than half his batted balls have featured an exit velocity north of 95 mph, and he’s connected on nearly three-quarters of his swing despite a swing-happy approach. Stay tuned.May 2, 2025 at 7:41 pm #280903I agree with both of those choices for players of the month. I was waffling on Mason Burns being the pitcher choice as a 41% K rate is incredibly good, but he did still walk 12% of batters as well.
May 6, 2025 at 1:27 pm #281313The Cardinals agreed with Kross, but they named Ixan Henderson their Pitcher of the Month. Among system pitchers who threw at least 10 innings in April, Henderson’s 2.79 ERA was 13th! His FIP was 1.92 but xFIP was 3.51. So it looks like the org is banking on FIP for their call, though it was not mentioned in their release.

June 2, 2025 at 9:04 pm #283852The Cardinal Nation’s choice as the top hitter in the #stlcards system during May is Florida Complex League C Rainiel Rodriguez, who bested seven other finalists. https://t.co/Er3z91FTvZ pic.twitter.com/Sip6L3OKLB

June 3, 2025 at 7:20 pm #283899I imagine this month’s choice was quite easy as Raniel was dominant. I don’t know if I agree that the Cards will pick Baez. Typically they don’t pick low level players, but I think that is more marketing as the lower level guys aren’t as well known and aren’t as good of prospects. I kind of expect them to pick Rodriguez as he deserves it and it helps create a little buzz around him.

June 4, 2025 at 8:07 am #283996Great to see Andre get this award. He’s long been one of my favorites. He and Ralston both, although Ralston has been devastated by injuries. Both should be in the MLB bullpen at some point. I expect Granillo to eventually be the closer unless Graceffo finds more consistency.
June 4, 2025 at 8:19 am #283999I still think Ralston will become minor league free agent eligible before reaching StL. Now in his third season with Springfield with not a chance given with Memphis tells me how the org feels about him. In a bit of trivia, at age 27, Ralston is one of the few players left in the system to have played with State College.
In terms of the award, his .167 BABIP suggests Ralston was the beneficiary of some good fortune last month.
How do you feel about the challenge of trying to compare starters and relievers for Pitcher of the Month?
June 4, 2025 at 10:59 am #284006Brian, I agree Ralston probably goes elsewhere to play in the Majors but I still think he gets there.
It’s easier to have a hitter and pitcher of the month rather than 3 awards so I support it either way. It is difficult to compare apples to apples though with starters and relievers. Was Granillo truly better than McGreevey last month? It’s difficult to say. I do know this – Neither could have done exactly what the other did.
June 6, 2025 at 4:19 pm #284201Rodriguez and K leader Tekoah Roby are the Cardinals May winners. The latter had a 3.86 ERA. Am I using the wrong criteria?
Roby and Rodriguez Named Cardinals Top Minor Leaguers in May
June 6, 2025 at 7:51 pm #284219I was correct on Rainel.
Brian, we both know that for the actual Cardinals rankings there is publicity and politics that play into it. Roby needs a little buzz around him to hype him up. He did pitch really well and your ERA criteria may filter out some guys that should at least be in the running from the Cards perspective. The team is likely looking on the statistical side with a significant emphasis on K% and BB%. Those 2 stats have much more predictability on who will be a good major leaguer than any other pitching stat like ERA. The team is in the business of hyping of the real prospects though and likely want to recognize individuals who are showing the trends they like to see, which you can see hinted at in the comments you shared.
I did calculate Roby’s rough K% and BB% (I say rough as it doesn’t account for GIDP and caught stealing, etc for types of outs resulting in less batters faced). His K% would be 34.7% and BB% of 4.2%.
I don’t have a problem with your choice for the month, but just trying to state my thoughts on why the Cards would have picked Tekoah Roby. If I had selected myself, it would have been McGreevy. McGreevy’s K% was 30.5% and BB% was also 4.2%. Roby’s numbers are better there, but I would select McGreevy due to the better traditional numbers and SP role over Granillo. Granillo did have an incredible 42.9 K% and 5.4 BB% though.
June 6, 2025 at 11:02 pm #284287It is also easier to put up numbers like Roby’s when he doesn’t average 5 innings per start.
I will start looking at K and BB rare more closely in months ahead. But this award is not about predicting MLB success. It is who had the best month.
I would use FIP along with ERA if I could get it for the month.
June 7, 2025 at 10:21 am #284306But this award is not about predicting MLB success. It is who had the best month
I agree with that from TCN’s perspective and somewhat the Card’s org, but again part of my point is the Cards org is also concerned with the publicity aspect and are not always going to choose the best pitcher, but the prospect to hype up.
Regarding Roby’s innings, you could even more so say the same thing about Granillo out of the pen. But I’m not as concerned about Roby’s IP/ start given the injury history. Roby has been building back up from the injuries and is going deeper the last month now. He is averaging almost 6 innings and just came off a June (so not a part of the May award) start where he went 6.2
July 1, 2025 at 7:02 am #286198The Cardinal Nation’s choice as the top hitter in the #STLCards organization during June is Memphis OF Nathan Church, who led the system in batting average, slugging and OPS – in his first month at Triple-A! https://t.co/1dMEYz8iE0 pic.twitter.com/lFqDmHRl5X

ParticipantThere are rumors out there saying that STL is looking for an OF. Is anyone else thinking that we already have one that can be added to the roster. I know, I know there’s some things working against that happening this season. He’s already played with PB (probably some conditioning) then SPF-AA where he tore up the ball. And that continued when he was promoted to MEM AAA. He’s 5’9″ 25 y.o. LHB, an 11th rounder in ’22 out of Cal. He’s got a good work ethic and has good speed Irvine. He’s playing the corners now but if he’s for real does he deserve a shot with the big club?
I’ve noticed that Sammy Hernandez has been playing 1B for about a month now. What’s with that?
July 1, 2025 at 11:13 am #286211I wouldn’t look too much at the Hernandez 1B thing. The Minors rosters are always jammed full with catchers. This is a good way to add a bit of versatility to his game and get him more regular at bats.
As for Church, they could have called him up instead of grabbing Hampson. This does allow Church to keep playing everyday instead of sitting on the bench. But we already have Scott and Siani as lefty CFers. Plus Koperniak is a lefty who can play CF. These guys don’t complement each other well. Maybe one gets moved at the deadline. Most likely Siani.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI was glad to see Churches BAbip below .400, I was expecting the “over”.
My first thought on JJ’s BAbip for June was, he probably beat out a few extra infield hits than normal. It’s not uncommon for rabbits to run a higher overall BAbip than slower players. Maybe that fits this month.
July 3, 2025 at 8:40 am #286341An unconventional choice, @Sgf_Cardinals RH reliever Ricardo Velez put together the top overall pitching performance in the #STLCards system in June, in our view. Compare the eight finalists and make your own call! https://t.co/pAGhFOJdWT pic.twitter.com/7GJISuMzIY

ParticipantIf it wasn’t going to be McGreevy, I was looking at Savacool. Maybe he’ll get his chance in July/Aug/Sept.
July 3, 2025 at 1:32 pm #286348I agree – if the only focus was starters. How does one weave exceptional bullpen work into the equation?
July 8, 2025 at 8:28 pm #286777July 8, 2025 at 9:12 pm #286786Deniel is an alright choice for the hitter of the month. I think I would have chose Church as my #1 as Brian did, but Ortiz and Wetherholt were close. Bernal and Baez also would have been good choices with their power numbers.
As you stated in your article and we have previously discussed, the Cards really value K% over ERA. By my rough calculation, Rincon had a 33.9 K% and 9.2 BB%. He did have a fairly good WHIP as well for the month at 1.14. I calculated his FIP and it was 2.78 for the month. I can kind of see why the Cards picked him as the pool this month was kind of weak and if you do the cutoff at 15 innings, the pool doesn’t look very good and Rincon likely is the best choice. If 10 innings is the cutoff, I don’t know who I would have picked. Velez is okay and maybe the best choice among a weak pool.
July 9, 2025 at 5:52 am #286812I have been thinking about going back to a separate Reliever of the Month. The way the Cards do it, a reliever isn’t ever likely to win, and for the starters, if I use the same 15 innings it will make for a better comparison of the candidates.
Had I done that in June, I wouldn’t have picked Rincon, either. Jason Savacool topped Rincon by a good margin in ERA, 2.13 to 3.42. Granted, some of his peripherals weren’t as good. Though he had a lower BAA, his walks were higher. His K rate was “only” 8.9 per nine innings.
But to them, Ks beat results. I am not there. Does that mean they tell their pitchers to rack up as many Ks as possible and not worry about the score?
Again, if it is about the best prospects of the month, not the best players, call it what it is.
