Glancing at the box, Mathews allowed a lot of traffic but didn’t get blown out. That aspect is a positive.
I see Mathews didn’t make Brian’s standouts.
All of his Ks lately have come on off speed stuff. He seems to have developed his crafty side, albeit with reduced command. That said, unless he can find a way to add those couple of ticks back that he had last year and avoid injury, his upside at the big league level is going to be pretty limited, a la Matthew Liberatore. That’s not a bad outcome, given where he was drafted. But the team desperately needs another 1-3 starter, not a #4-5 guy.
He needs either the ticks or pinpoint control.
Agreed. He has been swaying between good and less good starts lately. The really good one a couple of weeks back, he was locating perfectly and getting the swings and misses. If he’s not on perfectly, he’s going to walk guys and struggle.
It’s a combo that’s not uncommon amongst borderline big leaguers. We’ve got several in the rotation right now. It’s not a common recipe for a big league front line starter.

If this was the last week of the season, I would readily agree with you. However, the Texas League playoffs don’t begin until three weeks from tomorrow. A lot can change in the interim.

To give credit (or blame) where due, the Notebook author writes the summaries, too. That is either Marilyn Green or Michael Goff. The latter wrote last night’s recaps.
I do edit, post and publicize every article, but I don’t change the names of the standouts often and might overrule one or two of their Players of the Day all season long.
I agree that it was not a standout performance. I keep hoping he will return to being a given in next day’s standouts.

Pitching is still holding up, with a couple of extreme outliers it seems. The hitting is on a negative trend for sure. Not having guys like Wetherholt, Church and Mendlinger (currently) there is not helping. But you are right…they could still pull it together.

Tudor couldn’t break glass but after a slow start he finished that season 20-1.
Another throwing error by Gorman on Monday, August 28. I wonder if some team will still try using him on the infield, or will they just be glad to have him as their DH. Bad defense is painful to watch so I’m looking forward to Arenado’s return. The good news is that the kid has already made his first million with more to come.
Gorman hasn’t played 3B in years…I’d give him a little pass before pronouncing him washed up there yet. Yes, he’s a step back from Arenado, but he wasn’t bad over there when he was playing there in the minors.
