Which two players do you think will be added tomorrow?
I go on record why I used to care about roster expansion, but do no more…
Rosters expand tomorrow. I explain why I used to care a lot what the #stlcards did for the final month, but no more. (It has nothing to do with the current win-loss record.) (free article at The Cardinal Nation) https://t.co/VzyQ74aCTW pic.twitter.com/QZDkdtky3r

August 31, 2024 at 1:39 pm #266157Yes most likely it will be Matz and Siani.
August 31, 2024 at 1:43 pm #266159We are talking about a small handful of pitchers who probably scuffle for the 5-6 starter role next spring and a couple position players who will scuffle for bench roles. I can’t speak for anybody else, but I’m not working up a lather with that. Certainly, the loaded nachos munchers are not going to ramp up their interest level.
If I was King, and looking at this mess, maybe I would accept that Walker looks the same as he did and replace him with somebody we haven’t seen. Kopernick maybe. I am perfectly willing to wait until spring to see the laundry list pitchers.
August 31, 2024 at 1:45 pm #266160When will Lynn be added?
August 31, 2024 at 2:07 pm #266165bling, your response was right on brand.
Oddly, I just heard on the radio broadcast from Rooney and Ricky that teams can add two position players and one pitcher tomorrow. I think they meant to say one pitcher and one PP or two PPs. Or maybe I have no idea what they were talking about…
August 31, 2024 at 2:13 pm #266166booyah asked:
When will Lynn be added?
Last I heard, Lynn is supposed to make a rehab start for Memphis tomorrow (Sunday). He is up to 80-85 pitches so it may depend on how well he does in this outing.

ParticipantYea it was a stupid rule change for sure. It benefits no one on the ground level. Even if some arent ready for prime time, getting some mlb experience always benefits them and def benefits the fans esp if the team itself isnt bringing any excitement.

stlcard25ParticipantOne typo in your article that I saw…Shawn Armstrong was the one who was let go. Ole Shaun Alexander (the former best back in the league-NFL that is) never played for us, alas.
Anyway, if I was going to go with the most deserving, it would be Koperniak and probably McGreevy. If you want the best prospects, you’d go with Gorman and Graceffo. What will happen? Matz and Siani. Meh.
August 31, 2024 at 2:48 pm #266171See how quickly I forgot him? Thanks for the assist.
August 31, 2024 at 3:01 pm #266173Siani proved to be of value, and Matz is signed thru next year, but it doesn’t make any sense to have Lynn pitch any more, especially since it would require roster moves that otherwise don’t make any sense. But this is the Cardinals and there are the $10 million reasons.
August 31, 2024 at 8:35 pm #266189Siani’s defense has been elite, maybe the best CF defense in the NL. His offensive production has been improving in, this, his first year of getting regular playing time. He definitely has value. The problem is that he doesn’t have much of a track record. I think Siani is our center fielder when he comes back, and if he has a good spring, he’s our center fielder coming out of 2025 spring training. He’s earned it. If Scott is our center fielder of the future, the Cardinals will have to deal with it at some point. If you take Siani’s stats for April-May out of the equation, he’s OPS’ing near .700 with a BA of around .280. I don’t think he’s established his offensive ceiling yet.
August 31, 2024 at 9:00 pm #266192I have been trying to convince myself that Siani and Scott could be in the same outfield. The D would create some much needed buzz and might be somewhat of a draw.
They both show some potential for improvement at the plate and both have a knack for contributing to the offense beyond their BA. And its not as though our other outfielders have been prodigious run producers.
August 31, 2024 at 9:10 pm #266193You could probably have them both in the same OF if you had a third OF’er named Mays or Aaron.

We are assuming Matz doesn’t break anything on Monday. Lynn might be needed sooner than you think.
Issue is with having Pages and Siani in the lineup is that the offense is limited and we saw it most of the season with the guys who didn’t produce like we needed them to. Siani is good defense outfielder but I doubt we see the offensive uptick we are going to need. He needs to be put in the 4th OF role. Especially if we acquire a MOTO bat for CF.
Contreras needs to be slowly put into the role he was eventually going to be put in and that DH. Which leaves us with Pages putting in work behind the dish 100+ games next season.
August 31, 2024 at 9:24 pm #266195The problem with the offense wasn’t Siani and Pages not producing.

ParticipantWell ive seen where gorman is doing well in AAA ball. Small sample size but interesting. I read an article on it not sure who wrote it. But they attributed it to three possible things. One could be the difference between AAA pitching and mlb pitching. Two could be he tends to be streaky and was due. The third could be that hes getting better coaching down there and not so much with the big club. Im going with that one though i think the first one has something also possibly to do with it to a degree.
September 1, 2024 at 6:31 am #266202Uh, Gorman is currently batting .219 in his first eight games with Memphis. I guess that could be considered “doing well” compared to his .203 mark with St. Louis, but I will pass on writing an analysis article about it…
September 1, 2024 at 6:40 am #266203It’s time to give up on Gorman. Let’s move on and let him find his future somewhere else.
September 1, 2024 at 8:04 am #266208CIF you may very well be right BUT before Gorman and a few other strugglers are cut loose, I would love to see a new batch of coaches hired by a new manager in turn hired by a new POBO have a year to work with them.
September 1, 2024 at 8:04 am #266209Gormy just needs to drop one more level.

ParticipantWell gormans slash is 292/320/583 with 903 ops 2 hrs, 1 double with a much improved 21% k rate. As of that articles date. So seems to be a good improvement to me. Yea batting average isnt great but everyone always says those stats are outdated on here. We cant pick n choose, pick a lane. I never thought gorman would be a even good avg hitter let alone great. Plus you have to find positives where they are. Now if they arent going to fix the mess that is the coaching, yea lets move on and let him thrive somewhere else which im sure he will but if things are going to get fixed, lets hold on unless we got lots of talent to replace him which i havent seen.
September 1, 2024 at 10:43 am #266214It is such a small sample size for positive or negative analysis. That author wrote about Gorman based off Friday stats, and an 0-4 day dropped his average almost 80 points.

No but you’re not a right as you seem to think you are. Its not on them that the 2 aging veterans can’t even bat to their 2023 levels, your overhyped RBI product can’t hit a lick and your wind tunnel at the plate who plays 2nd can only get it going for one month. When you add those 2 It pretty much puts more pressure on your pitching staff to keep us in games and puts you at a serious disadvantage most nights at the plate.
We don’t need a poor man’s Pete Crow Armstrong getting 500 PA next season. I know you long for the days of Whitey Ball but he dead and like the Dino’s he isn’t coming back. What we really need is VS2 to improve and a trade for a moto bat in the OF using our alleged young sluggers as the bait.

Michael Siani will resume his role as the #STLCards starting CF, with Oli Marmol saying Siani will “get the bulk” of playing time there.Steven Matz is available out of the bullpen today. His role past today/the rotation is still TBD. Andre Pallante def starts tomorrow though.

This made me chuckle. Matz is probably capable of an abdomnal strain from brushing his teeth in the morning.
