Graceffo with 6 innings, 8 strikeouts, and 1 run allowed tonight. He’s starting to come around more lately. His fastball now gets up to around 95. He doesn’t need 97 like he was at. Where he was at tonight should be good enough. His control still needs a little honing in, but he’s much closer than he was at the start of the season.

Graceffo comes out and goes 1-2-3 in the 7th. No walks, 8 K’s, 5 hits, 1 run. Bling will probably say he did bad since he’s in line for the loss (because Memphis has scored zero runs on 3 hits), but he did well in my book. Let’s see if he can stay consistent.

Sometimes you get an undeserved loss like Graceffo Tuesday, sometimes an undeserved win like Robberse Sunday. It balances out. BTY, I wonder if Robberse’s performance has HAL reconsidering going with Libby again this weekend.

The system is 90-88 on the year, so pretty middling. Springfield has cooled considerably since the hot start, and Memphis doesn’t seem to have anyone knocking hard at the door of the big leagues. It’s hard to look at the minor leaguers and say that they are forming the core of a championship team in the next 3-5 years, which is what you’d hope for from the Cardinal farm system for most of the last 20ish years.

It is good to see a few solid performances, but we are in need of a lot of them to supplement the big league team in the next year or two unless we are hoping for a long term rebuild of 3+ years to being competitive again.

Not much offense coming up in the near term – at least not offense that also plays good defense. Baker is limited to 1B and is a downgrade to Goldschmidt there on defense. Prieto is mostly poor everywhere. Saggese might be Donovan level slightly below average all over. He might even be average at 2B. Then there’s Victor Scott who has the opposite issue where his bat is the question mark but there’s still hope. Therefore, no sure fire position players are coming up. We will see pitching help both in the pen and I believe the rotation too. But for now, the hitters we have need to be good enough or we need to make trades.

I forgot to mention Crooks. He has been very good overall this season. But with Contreras and Herrera blocking him, and with Pages still holding on in between, Crooks doesn’t really have a path to the big leagues. I’d consider him potentially trade bait.

Not meaning to disrespect Crawford, but Fermin should have his roster slot.

It’s difficult to find your feet at the plate playing once per week.

Crawford is merely insurance if Winn gets injured. We’ve seen what happens when the Cardinals don’t have depth to fill in for injuries.

Fermin has played 135 games at shortstop in 8 years.

I agree. I have said that repeatedly.

McGreevey gets an 8 inning complete game tonight. Walks none and strikes out 11 while giving up 1 run. And just like Graceffo the other day, he takes the loss because Memphis scored a goose egg.

Racking up strike outs tends to run up the pitch count, so it is surprising that McGreevy got through 8 with 97 pitches. His control and stuff must have really been on. It’s too bad he gave up a go ahead run and the O didn’t bail him out.

How rare is a triple? Palm Beach just had 3 of them all in the top of the 9th. Their opponent then just led off the bottom of the 9th with . . . you guessed it, a triple.

In other news, Mathews is on for his 2nd start for Peoria. So far 5 innings, 1 walk, 2 hits, and 6 strikeouts to go with an unearned run. He’s sporting a .75 ERA so far after moving up. I guess he’s transitioning nicely.

And a couple more interesting tidbits . . . Baker hit his 13th homer for Memphis tonight. He’s been on fire lately. Also, Saggese committed 3 errors as a SS today.

And then Mathews goes out for the 6th and gives up walk, single, single, grand salami before getting 3 outs.

Donning a jersey labeled as Oat Milkers on the front and “Baseball Player” on the rear of every jersey, Springfield walks it off 1-0 late into the night after a long rain delay. Tink Hence with 6 innings, 0 runs, and thirteen strikeouts. He did surrender 5 hits and a walk.

The box score shows all 5 runs as earned for Mathews.

    0-1. 4.15 ERA. Meh. 🙂

Hence had a really good game last night. 6 shutout innings with 13 Ks and 1 BB.

His K%-BB% in the season is 24.2%. He may make another couple of starts for AA since he had a couple bad ones, but I expect Hence to be in AAA by the end of June.

Thanks for including the video from Springfield’s Twitter Brian. The slow mo replays were a great chance to view Hence’s stuff. His changeup is deadly and should really help him neutralize left handed batters.
