It’s hard to say if Nuñez will amount to anything down the line, but it is encouraging to see him a little more under control.
I’m not a fan of making him a starter because it feels like we’re forcing the round peg in a square hole. But I may be completely wrong on that one. So far the early results are mixed with several highs and lows.
I liked the Ixan Henderson pick in the draft when it happened. Now I’m even more excited about him. That’s several really good outings for him now. He’s likely to get bumped up a level at mid-season.
One other thing I want to comment on but I’m not sure where to put this comment so I’ll just put it here. I strongly believe that we are going to see a revolution happen in starting pitching. Just like with Nunez yesterday and so many others before him, we often see starters (when they are pitching well) get through 4 or 5 innings with few blemishes and then at some point in the 5th, 6th, or 7th, the wheels fall off. I guess Nuñez isn’t a good example because they removed him after 4 before this could happen. And that’s where I think we’re heading. Teams will have 8 starting pitchers all throwing about 4-5 innings per outing and then roughly 5 other bullpen pitchers who give max effort for 1 or 2 innings at most. It might even be 10 of these pseudo starters and just 3 true bullpen guys for some teams without a true “ace” pitcher. We are seeing the Cardinals do more of this in the minor leagues this year and it’s something I’ve been wanting to see tried for a number of years because it seems to fit today’s world better. I don’t think too much of the labels for starters vs relievers in the minors. The Cards have always been about getting guys reps, and if you have a prospect throwing 5+ innings once a week vs 1 inning 5 times a week it just seems to fit the rhythm and team workload best. We’ve seen a number of minor league starters become relievers. It’s a lot harder to make a reliever a starter again.
Our boy Quinn just gave up a 2-run homer for his 3rd run through 5. In his defense, he’s against one of the best teams at their level.
Quinn turned it into a fairly good start over 6.1 innings with 8Ks and 1BB. With him still pitching at A ball, I am curious if the Cards A: don’t think he is ready B: aren’t ready to push an A+ SP out of the role, or C: don’t want Quinn playing for a bad A+ team.
Despite his good start tonight, I think Rincon would be my choice to move out of the PB rotation for Matthews. Try him in a RP role and see how it goes.
I’d take Hansen out of the Peoria rotation. But then again, I’m biased. I wanted Hansen to be in the upper 30’s when we were doing prospect rankings when others wanted to put him in the late teens while I also wanted to put Rincon in the upper 30’s or lower 40’s. Rincon just turned 22 a month ago. He’s the youngest pitcher at Peoria and he actually gets better over time at each level. Hansen will turn 24 in a couple months and doesn’t look to have improved at all since we drafted him.
The other alternative is promote Hjerpe and Hence. But I’m not sure who Hence replaces at AAA.
McGreevy had the mother of all melt downs last night. Good grief. He has enough experience he should be able to maintain composure and stop the bleeding, unless he is hurt somehow.

I noticed in Marilyn’s report that Nick Raquet held his own better in his second AAA appearance. Maybe another Roycroft. (It’s something to feel good about.) I’m rooting for Loutos the Div 3 guy too.
I am going to the Springfield vs NW Arkansas game tonight since that ballpark is about 15 minutes from my house. I am hoping to see a AA Birds victory since the parent club is so depressing.
Anyone have any word on why Meija left after 1 AB in the FCL game? He had gotten off to a good start and I am hoping he isn’t injured. He is our hitting prospect with the highest ceiling in my opinion.

I think it is safe to say Michael Curialle will be the player of the day tomorrow. 3 for 3 so far with 3 HRs and 7 RBIs.
Yes indeed Albert! I was just about to post about it. He started the day with zero homers and now has 3 on the season.
Springfield has given up 11 runs today. 9 of them by Tink Hence. The only thing is that none of them is an earned run thanks to 3 errors (including one by Hence).
Hence allowed 6 hits and 3 walks and only 1 K in 3.2 innings, so it was not just the errors. Granted it is impossible for a pitcher to succeed when defense gives the bad guys multiple extra outs, but it reads like Tink was not helping matters either. Some Ks would have been timely. Even after this one, his WHIP remains low, but less low, so we will see how it goes.
