I see that Hjerpe had a melt down in the 1st for Peoria. Walks, HBP, pulled after 0.2 IP. Hope its not a physical problem.

bling… Hjerpe was pulled because he reached his pitch count. The same is true of Matthews start at PB.
Thanks for the info on Hjerpe. I think he was getting a bit of game action right at the end of last year. Was he held up during ST, I don’t remember? 2/3 IP seems absurd if he is not hurt, given its his third year in the system.
While it may be technically accurate to say Hjerpe was pulled due to pitch count, it isn’t what you think. They wanted and expected him to go deeper into the game.
They count number of pitches, not outs. Used to be they pulled anyone who needed more than 30 pitches in an inning, calling them “high stress innings”. Hjerpe threw 34 in the first inning last night and that was it for him.
Last year, Hjerpe worked in relief in the Arizona Fall League, throwing an inning at a time. He was going 2-3 innings when I was in spring camp.
Coincidentally, just today, the Players Union issued a press release blaming the pitch clock on increased pitching injuries.

Graceffo with the rough start to the year. He’s generally been ok t overmatched since that dazzling run he had in high A where he looked like the next Shane Bieber. I was pretty high on him but now he’s looking like a relief/back end prospect at best.
Graceffo was a lot better before he hurt his shoulder. That is very nearly always the case with bum shoulder guys. Dakota Hudson a recent example. We need to keep an eye on Roby for the same reason.
It seems reasonable to ask if Arias is considered a reliever or a starter. Same with Winquest. As careful as they seem to be with pitchers, it’s more than a little hard to believe they would just throw a guy out there for 5 innings right off the bat unless he were worked up to start, and probably had been on schedule for an extended outing, the same as whoever threw the 1st inning.
I think they have 6 or maybe even 7 guys who they conditioned up to be starters in Spring training due to injuries and short starts. I’d consider these guys as starters too right now. But they may get pushed out of that job if everyone stays healthy, which is rare.
5 shut out innings is a good way not to get pushed out, but there is always next time for things to go south.
Could Robberse be the first starter called up, if needed? The 22 year old is currently 2 and 0 with a 1.80 ERA at Memphis.
