Chase Davis’ name has showed up a lot lately. He seems to have settled into Peoria pretty well. Hopefully our first rounder will get some more traction and head toward the big leagues soon.

Really good outing from Hence. Very effective as well throwing 4 IP on 49 pitches. And Crooks continues to dominate. Nice to see Robberse at least get some game action in a rehab start.
A caution about Hence… Did he purposely dial it back last night, or is he ailing again?

It would not make sense for Hence to pitch exactly the same as before he went down because his arm could not tolerate that. He may be searching and experimenting to find a way his arm will tolerate and he can be effective. Or he did try to pitch like he did before and his arm didn’t tolerate it again so now its sore again.
3 pitches into this start Graceffo looks focused. Going to be a good night. Last week I called the bad start. Going for 2 for 2.
I didn’t realize Baker is only hitting .230. What would that equal in MLB? .200-.210 ? With a homer a week? We’ve seen that before and didn’t like it.
Yeah Baker mashes mistakes and it sounds like he has a hole in his swing that better pitchers can exploit. I hope he gets another opportunity whether it is with the Cards or elsewhere, but I don’t think he will be an every day big leaguer despite mashing AAA HRs.
And see what I mean? Graceffo goes 6 shutout innings on 3 hits allowed. I feel like I can see the difference in Graceffo and can guess his results by that difference in his demeanor within 5 pitches into the game. Two for two.

IMO, difference in demeanor takes precedence over ‘you are who your stats say you are’. I think you are who you say you

Oli makes a lot of comments that don’t mean anything. I can tell you how Pallante looks. We lose every game he starts. That is how he looks.

With only a few weeks left in the single A season it is probably safe to assume that Wetherholt will finish the year in Palm Beach. Is it safe to assume he will begin 2025 in Peoria?
I would imagine that he starts at least at Peopria, if not perhaps Springfield if he takes a leap over the winter. Twice as many walks as Ks, but not a lot of power just yet. He seems a little advanced for Palm Beach and with a winter of training and prep, he should hopefully sail past Peoria early next year too. As bling is fond to say, lots of guys look good in Springfield so he’ll need to prove his mettle in early 2026 to earn a chance at the call up.
Not a good day for our minor league teams. In 3 games thus far we’ve been outscored 24-1. Pitching has generally been good this season but obviously not today. We were against one of the best teams in High A and in the Dominican though.
I can’t think of a Cardinals hitter hopping over High-A. Can anyone?
Updates: Since Wetherholt was the earliest pick since Drew, I checked Drew. After a year in indy ball between his first and second drafts, J.D. started at Double-A. But that was over a quarter century ago.
Two years later, Albert started in Low-A and later, after almost an entire season in A ball, he skipped Double-A.

I’m also fond of saying don’t get lathered up over 60 PAs in low A, but nobody listens.
Quinn Ace Mathews with 7 IP, 0 runs, 11 Ks, 0 BBs, 5 hits. 93 pitches so he is working very efficiently as well despite racking up the Ks.

I would really consider promoting Mathews to AAA. You could get about 5 starts in before the end of the year to test him as he seems to have made the adjustments for AA.
Mathews is an obvious Spring Training non-40 man invite and I think he has a real chance of cracking the rotation in April or May. He checks the boxes of the stuff guys like me and the boxes of the traditional IP/quality starts like Bling. He is pitching deep into games, and already has thrown 119 innings and will likely end up with 140-150. That sets him up really well to throw a MLB SP full workload next year.
I think I have Mathews as our #1 prospect even above Wetherholt. Maybe I am being overly optimistic based off his results, but his minors stats and durability suggest he could be a work horse ace or #2 SP.

Yes but if he was hitting .150 in those 60 PA’s there would be plenty of lathering in the other direction.
