2024 Minor League game thread Week 12 – 6/24-6/30

I would like to see him promoted to Peoria here soon.

There are many people on the Peoria roster more deserving of a promotion than Chase Davis.

Hjerpe with his 2nd 5-inning no-hitter in a row. Pitcher of the week again?

Hjerpe’s stuff must be very good. He misses a lot of bats with a 30+ K% this year. He has only allowed 29 hits in 45.1 innings. The bad part is 25 BBs. He definitely has things to work on like building back up innings after missing time last year and the control. Control and innings are easier to improve over the long run than improving stuff is.

The outfield for 2025 is really up in the air. There would be reasons to not rely on Edman, Nootbaar and Carlson. Walker has yet to stick. He looked good last year but opponents developed strategies over the winter that stifled him. The same might happen to Burleson. Who knows. Nothing is written in ink. Its wide open to anyone who can stand out.

I have to give Michael McGreevy credit. I had wrote him off as a depth type, but something seems to have changed or clicked in the last month. He historically had K rates that hovered around 20%. For the month of June, his K% is up to 27.6% with a 7.8% BB%. His HR/9 is 0.93 with a great career GB% around 50% as well. Those are quite good numbers and would translate fairly well to the majors. I hope to see him continue the trend over more starts and hopefully he has figured something out that will truly let him be a 4/5 SP for years to come.

He did add a cutter this year to his arsenal this year. Looking at his pitch splits from April and May versus June, he has swapped up his arsenal to really cut down on the changeup rate and to replace them with 4 seamers up in the zone. This appears to be doing him great favors and I’m guessing this changeup was getting hit hard previously. His release point also seems much more consistent among all pitch types and is slightly more horizontal and vertical. His velocity also ever so slightly is up and as Blake noted in his scouting report, McGreevy’s sinker needs would play a little better with just another MPH or 2 on it.

Baker is already on the 40 man and had an option year used this year. A reminder, but it isn’t like Baker is completely untested at the MLB level. He has 99 PA last year which is about a month of regular playing time. He did not perform well in the short sample and had a 79 rWC+. Baker seems like a good September addition to me or an injury replacement if Goldy gets hurt. He will also get an extended look in spring training next year.

Davis and Walker also had good games yesterday as well.

I think there is potential of a Burly-Baker platoon at 1B next year but I don’t see Luken getting much of a shot this year.

Shady, who are you thinking Prieto would replace? Keeping in mind that Noot will be returning and likely displacing Firmin. So Prieto would have to displace someone else.
