Sadly, I find it difficult to designate any of our Cardinals as an all-star. There are some “used to bes” and a couple of “might be one days,” but currently the cupboard is bare, with the possible exception of Gray. On the other hand I’m not excited about all-stars and the all-star game one way or the other.

The all-star game is about a month away. How many Cardinals will be selected to the team and who?

I’m predicting we get 2 selected. Helsley and Gray

    Burleson has a chance…

Helsey, Gray, and Romero are our best bets. Contreras could still make it as well especially with Realmuto going down with an injury. Winn and Gorman have small chances but could depending on injury replacements.

I’d put Burly in the small chances list as well. I don’t see Burly making it unless he gets a lot of fan support. He has played good not great and is around 30th in the NL in wRC+, but 60th in fWAR.
For what it is worth, Gray is the only Cards rep The Athletic has on the roster. ESPN+ has predictions as well, but I don’t have access.

Edit: To clarify, those rankings are out of qualitied players. There are likely players that will make the All Star game that aren’t quite at qualifying hits PA wise

Contreras should make it with his second half last year and first half this year.

Yeah, Helsley for sure. Gray probably. Winn maybe? There are some good young shortstops just in our division so it will be tough for him.

Always loved the all star game as a kid and younger adult. These days with the leagues no longer autonomous it is not as good. But it is still probably the best all star game in sports. The other sports have mostly done away with the game and do more of a skills competition.

Long before Selig tried to inject some interest by awarding HFA to the winning league, the AS game used to be quite an event. And even though it had no bearing on anything to do with the regular or post-season the players played that game as if it were an elimination game. Both Ray Fosse and Pete Rose would attest to that.

It will be Helsley and that is it.

Futures game who knows. Nothing is guaranteed if you do make it.

You hit my All-Star Game hot button. As is, it is a first-half game only. What players did in the second half last year is ignored.

I agree, it is all about first half stats. Every year I get into an argument with others who seem to think it should be the ‘All Stats Game’. In which case why go through the fan vote process and just have the computer tell us who we want to see out there.

I doubt any Cardinal will get voted in, but everybody gets a participation pick. I don’t know if the Cardinals org has any clout with Bochy, but if so, then they will be lobbying for Winn, especially if he keeps hitting at a .300 pace. We need a fresh new star. Helsley being picked wouldn’t do us as much good.

Bochy will be managing the AL right?

Ken Rosenthal listed out who he wants in the All Star game. For the Cardinals, Gray and Helsey were the only 2 representatives. Masynn Winn was the only honorable mention we had.

I agree with his choices at this point in time. He also had Skenes making it which I very much approve of despite the limited innings. He has pitched great and realistically the All Star game is about putting players on the field that fans want to watch.

Of this nation’s 3 major sports, baseball’s all-star game is the most watchable. The NFL all star game is a total joke……I’d rather watch reruns of “Maude” than tune into their all star festivities. Buddy Boy Selig greatly damaged the baseball all star game during his tenure. How can anybody take a baseball game seriously when it has the possibility of ending in a tie? I long for the days when both sides would do most anything to gain victory in this game.

Helsley is a shoo-in, but I’d rather he take time off!

No surprise. The Cardinals have no All-Star starters.

These uniforms are awful. I can’t believe anyone would want to buy one of these. Just go back to the team uniforms and pass on this money grab.

Helsley is the only rep for the Cards. I would much rather he had some time off!

I like players wearing their team uni’s. The very first all-star game back in 1933 featured the National Leaguers in “National League” uniforms, but I think that was the only time either league had custom uni’s until recent years.

Of course today there is more interest in generating new forms of revenue, which they figure the one of a kind uni’s will bring. Well, it’s always been that way. But back in the day no one had the extra income to blow on a replica All-Star jersey. Instead guys would put together barnstorming teams and play exhibitions to get a few extra bucks.

Oh, and congrats to Ryan Helsley! He will definitely be the closer should the NL have a close lead in the ninth. He may not get into the game otherwise – but I imagine they will get him an inning somewhere.

Yeah, each player wearing either their home or road uniform was the way to go. In my view, the players wearing all of those different and magnificient looking Big League uniforms served to add to the spectacle and grandeur of the AS game. When they were all together on the field of play it was really something else to behold. The uniforms pictured in this thread look like something a road crew working on the shoulder of the highway would wear.

I have been following this site that a chronicling our 1964 season. The guy does a great job with an in depth write up of each game as the days go by, with a lot of humor injected into the storylines.

He also has a lot of photos including an all-star photo of Ken Boyer coming in to the NL dugout after homer it. You see all those all-stars in this team uni’s reaching up to congratulate the eventual NL MVP.

I would say if you want to do something uniform, have the guys where an “NL” and “AL” hat, but keep the regular uni’s.

Winn was gonna be hard pressed to make it. Even with Betts out for injury, Lindor is probably more deserving than Winn.

When you average the WAR among the best SS in the league, De La Cruz, Lindor, Betts, and Abrams all rate higher than Winn, then Turner got voted in.

Winn is right behind them though.
