    Bottom of 5.

Donovan – On 3-2 goes the other way and pokes it into left field for a leadoff base knock and right now the Cardinals are seeing the ball very well off Mr. Cole

Nooty – Hits a pop-up behind 3rd base where both the 3rd baseman Lemahieu and the SS Volpe converge and at the last moment Lemahieu gives way to Volpe who makes the catch and he fires it across the diamond to 1st……safe on a very close play. Boy Donovan sure drifted unnecessarily too far off the bag on that pop-up.

Goldy – Flies out to Cabrera in left field.

Arenado – Infield pop-up where the 1st baseman Bauer gloves it just a few yards up the 1st baseline from home plate.

A Torres 2 out double down the line in right here in the 6th puts the kabosh on any no-no aspirations by Montgomery. Now let’s get the “W”. Yanks cannot muster a run…..2-0 Birds heading to the bottom of the 6th.

Gormans D at 2B has passed my eye test. No longer a concern.

It sure has passed the test, JJ. It’s almost like having Fernando Vina out there at 2nd when Gorman is manning 2nd.

    Bottom of 6.

    Burleson – Reaches 1st on catcher’s (Trevino) interference……sweet start.

Walker – Whiffs hacking on a solid dose of some Cole high heat

Gorman – Strikes out swinging on a 100 mph 4-seamer and Cole appears to have recaptured the fountain of youth here as he’s really delivering the smoke now. Gerrit must know this is his last inning of labor as he’s leaving nothing out there on the bump.

Knizner – Taps one right back to where that pitch originated from and Cole will lollipop his toss over to Bauers at 1st to retire the side

After watching Libby yesterday and Monty today, I see many similarities in pitch types, but the glaring difference is Monty’s command. Monty spots the edges consistently, whereas Libby is more scattered in and around the zone.

Its like Monty is using a rifle and Libby has a shotgun. Spray and pray is not pitching effectively. Maybe Libby can tighten his command of pitches as he continues to develop. Afterall, Monty is a FA-to-be. He’s had his developmental time.

That PB by Knizner on the K was brutal. Just plain didn’t catch it.

edit: and of course that guy scores.

Bottom of the 7th. Righty Jimmy Cordero the new Yankee pitcher.

Edman – On 3-2 Tommy lines a base hit to right.

Donovan – 2-2 and plunked by a misguided Cole pitch on the afternoon. On 3-1 Brendan gets his teeth into one to deep right!….. Kiner-Falefa drifts back and looks up and you can kiss that one goodbye…..4-1 Birds.

Nooty – Flies out to Bader in center.

Goldy – Grounds it neatly out to Volpe at short and he’ll glove it and wing her on over to Bauers’ waiting mitt at 1st base for out #2.

Arenado – On 3-2 grounds it past a spread out Lemahieu at 3rd and into left field for a base knock.

Burleson – Grounds out to Torres at 2nd.

(shaking head) Gallegos gets behind the 8 ball right off the bat by having a clock violation, then walks his first batter. If he blows this one, I’ll personally go pick him up and cart him off to Memphis…… joshing of course……Geovanny will be just fine…. hopefully.

    Gallegos does the job…..still 4-1 after 7 1/2.

Too bad these pinstripers don’t come visiting more often as we seem to have our way with them. Even historically we’ve bettered them in head-to-head world series play, beating them 3 times while losing twice.

Bottom of the 8th. Cordero still manning the hill.

Carlson – Fore! as he golfs a base hit into center. Speaking of “fore”, wouldn’t it be nice to get four this inning and salt this game away.

Gorman – Carlson to 2nd on a Cordero wild pitch. Caught looking for strike 3.

Knizner – Strikes out swinging but Carlson steals 3rd and the throw eludes Lemahieu and trickles out into short left field where the SS Volpe retrieves it and guns it home but Carlson scampers on in safely and now we’re looking at a 5-1 St. Louis advantage.

Edman – Infield hit that Bauers couldn’t quite execute at 1st.

Donovan – Grounds out to Torres at 2nd.

Hicks on to close matters out. We’ve out hit them 11-2 and out scored them 5-1……a very nice afternoon indeed.

Hicks surrenders a 2 out base hit to right by Volpe. Bauers is NY’s last chance to extend this ballgame further…….and he walks. Higashioka grounds out to 3rd to end this ballgame.

    Your fantastic final:

    St. Louis Cardinals 5
    New York Yankees 1

I think to a man, we all knew there was no way in blazes that Gerrit Cole was going to beat our Birds in this particular series. Now let’s hope our boys use this as a springboard for a dynamite second half of the season.

The Reds win another thriller. A two out two run homer in the last of the 8th by Stephenson put them up 4-2 on San Diego. And then Odor lines out to India with the tying run at 2nd and two outs in the 9th.

    Milwaukee wins over Pittsburgh 6-3.

At least we didn’t lose any ground today.

Miami got swept by Atlanta. Let’s hope they are starting a tail spin as we head to South Florida.

Nice win and a much better series than I had predicted. I pegged this as a 1-5 home stand, and we end up with a split.

Gallegos much better coming in more rested. Not sure of the wisdom of using Hicks in a 4 run game, but then he had not pitched in awhile.

Even though we are far from enthralled with today’s NL Central divisional outcomes, it is always nice to have the esteemed Rat give us the Bird’s-eye glimpse of the out-of-town scoreboard…….thank you, Rat!

In past times, when men were men, if an announcer had mentioned a no hitter while it was in progress somebody would have charged the booth and thrown him out the window. It wouldn’t even be mentioned between two guys sitting at home following the game, for fear of a jinx. It just wasn’t done then, but it sure is now. Now days the announcers are blabbing about it every inning and guys don’t think twice about blabbing it out. Twitter, message boards, sports bars, everywhere. Its not just the game that has changed for the worse.

Sorry Blingster! I’ll refrain from mentioning any possible no-no’s while in the midst of PBP ever again…..unless it’s the opposing pitcher of course.

    Speaking of no-hitters…….

Back in the 1970s the Reds were in St. Louis for a Monday night game on ABC/NBC, whatever. My dear old dad had to go to a parish council meeting and didn’t realize there was a rain delay of about 90 minutes. He was a big Reds fan.

Anyway, when he got home and came walking into the house we are watching the game and he asks what the score is. I tell him the score and then tell him that Don Gullett has a no-hitter going. He got a big smile and grin on his face. He didn’t realize it was only the 2nd inning because of the rain delay.

Not sure why he got mad about that……

Yeah, I couldn’t help but notice that. I’m not superstitious, but I don’t kick the ship’s cat as I’m boarding a vessel on a Friday at dawn to set sail towards a red sky…

Neat story about Pops, Rat. As a quick aside referencing Don Gullett, to this day no MLer in the history of this great game smoked more cigarettes than Don Gullett. He’d even occasionally sneak one in the dugout. I read once where he was good for 3 packs a day…….which rekindles memories from about 15 years ago where this one big lug who looked to be about 6’6 and 300 lbs. in front of me at a 7-11 convenience store, purchased 5 cartons of Marlboro reds. I commented to him “those things will kill you, you know” and then he told me that he was a truck driver and that he drove his big rig 15 hours a day (obviously a huge violation) and he smoked 5 packs a day to help keep him alert. Anyway, Don was quite the athlete having score 11 touchdowns in a high school football game and 47 points in a basketball game.
