LHP Jordan Montgomery (4-7, 3.69) vs. LHP Framber Valdez (7-5, 2.27)

(and Bally Sports Southeast/Southwest Extra)I am thinking this 6 game homestand is make or break for this season. Its geting too late, and we are too far behind to dawdle. We need to come on now. They are good teams, the Astros and Yankees. If we can do well, and maybe get some confidence and enthisiasm, then we have a lengthy strethch vs weak teams and could theoretically put something together.
If we come back home and flat line its all over.
To get to 90 wins Cards must go 58-27 the rest of the way.
That is a .682 clip if you are keeping score at home.

Agreed ZTR, but as luck would have it, we probably don’t need to win 90 games. We’ll see. I am just hoping they can do something to make the rest of the season interesting and, dare I say, fun to watch.
The fact that the organizational philosophy needs to go over the side if there is to be any hope for the fututre is a seperate conversation.
The Astros are not what they used to be.
And Judge is out for the Yankees. That lineup is not the same without him.
I see us taking four of these six games.

The Brewers start a four game set at Shea Stadium against the Mets.
And the Pirates have a three game set with the Padres before hosting the Brewers this coming weekend.
I can see us gaining some ground this week.

Don’t discount the Astros. They aren’t at 106 win clip but they’re still pretty good.
In regards to Cardinal baseball, I do my best to maintain a mindset that consists of being satisfied if the team can provide enough good baseball to place themselves in a position to have a sliver of a chance around the beginning of August. If they do, that’s all I can really ask for because they’re not going to win every year. Simply be reasonably competitive so I can stay interested for the majority of the season and have some fun watching the action and I’m a happy baseball fan. But they haven’t been at all competitive since the end of last September. And it ain’t no fun…As for winning 90 games? At this juncture they’d have to play at a .577 clip just to break even and end the season at .500 and nothing has given me the slightest indication that this team can begin to play .577 baseball over the course of the remaining 85 games, so I’d be surprised if they ended the season as a .500 baseball team. Conversely, it wouldn’t surprise me too much if what we’ve seen to this point is the best they have to offer up and I wouldn’t be entirely astounded if they really packed it after the break and played the type of horrible baseball that made the first half seem like a walk in the park.
Houston’s solid to the core, booyah, and I think they have way more than a decent chance to become the first team to repeat as WS Champions since the Yankees.
Yeah, he’s still in drydock, but the Astros have one of the best managers in the game and he’ll figure out how to keep the Astros winning until Alvarez returns to action. You know how smart ol’ Dusty is…Haha!
I wasn’t impressed with our two games in London. This team will never be able to go on a run with this current rotation. It just won’t happen. Our offense is capable of putting up some runs on occasion but this pitching staff is still brutally bad and Mo is still a few weeks away from doing his annual dumpster dive.
Do any of you posters still have a cow when Jordan Hicks enters the game? I about sh~t myself when I see him on the mound. I usually yell “FIRST PITCH STRIKE ROSENTHAL!” and if he throws a ball I then yell “GET HIM OUT OF THERE NOW!”
He’s not been too bad lately. But a disaster is looming.

You can still enjoy the game for the game, if you let slip all illusions about the post-season.
“Have a cow” – that brings back memories. My sister and her friends used to say that all the time back in the early ‘70s as teenagers. Don’t hear it much anymore.
I cannot see us taking 4 of these 6. We just never show enough to get anything going, other than that stretch in May where we were good. Problem is, instead of taking off from there and being around .500 by now, we went back to our old ways.
These next six might be the ones that finally get Marmol his walking papers. I can see them being a disaster. Obviously we could get something going, but I think it is more likely we fold.
As for Hicks, I don’t freak out these days when he comes in. Used to, but he is showing a level of maturity that has impressed me.
That’s good advice, CardFrance. It’s always good to enjoy the game and to also be aware that there’s plenty of good baseball action in places other than in St. Louis. The Cardinals have always been my favorite sports team, but they certainly don’t have any sort of exclusive hold on the game of baseball itself. There’s plenty of action to follow around the league and I enjoy doing so every summer.
Astros have F. Valdez (L) going in this one. He’s going to be a handful. 7-5, 2.27 ERA, 1.000 WHIP, 9.5 K/9, 12 quality starts out of 15 starts. Doesn’t do any good to load up with righties against him.
I haven’t seen anything about the Cards starter, but obviously we are not going to match that.
Obviously Hicks has been exponentially more effective recently than he was earlier in the season when the Cardinals were hard at work digging the hole that they now find themselves buried in and he spent plenty of time with the shovel. But I don’t blame him. I blame the guy who continued to place the baseball into his hand late in close games during high leverage situations. And he did it time after time during a portion of the season in which the Redbirds still seemingly had a chance. The way this season has regressed, there’s practically no longer any pressure insofar as a saving a game to hold on to first place or overtake another NLC rival to move up in the standings. High leverage vanished weeks ago, so what the heck? Run him out there as much as you see fit and get him some work. It’s no longer a big deal. What continues to be a big deal to me is to get rid of the guy who continued to run Hicks out there to lose all those early games so we don’t get lousy reruns next season.
Yeah, Houston has plenty of talent, Bling. I never make predictions, but the Astros will eventually overtake the Rangers in the ALW. They’ll hit stride in July and play their best baseball through the dog days and I think they’ll win that division by more than half a dozen games. I also think they’ll prove to be the best team in the AL. Tampa had the gaudy start out of the gate and has continued to play well, but I think Houston has a good chance to repeat as WS Champs.
Edit…My heartfelt favorite choice in the AL would be the O’s. I’d love to see them finish better than both the Yankees and Red Sox and it looks like they may do so.
Did I miss something or do the Cards just not want to play Mercado except for defensive replacement? I know it is a limited sample size, but he is hitting over .300 with a .747 OPS. I remember a couple of other outfielders who only got a few a bats before they were traded away! Let the guy play a game or two and see how he does! Maybe he will surprise you!

The Brewers lead the Mets 2-1 in the last of the 6th at Shea Stadium.
The Reds and Orioles are in a rain delay in the 3rd at Memorial Stadium. Currently it’s a 2-1 Baltimore lead.
Cubs are off tonight. The White Sox are in Los Angeles tonight to face the Angels. That is the late game that me and Whitey Herdog will be tuned in to. Currently there is no score in the top of the 1st.
Mercado has almost 1,000 MLB PAs and a career OPS+ 81.
Besides all that, IMO Ollie doesn’t like him.
Haha!…Yeah, the party was over for the “Big O” a long time ago, but he’s actually tearing it up with a .310 BA…I can’t figure out why he’s still on the team and would have guessed he’d be hanging out with “Manny” Motter by now…It’s been a weird season.
